1841 census look-up please- TURNER
« on: Tuesday 02 June 09 09:11 BST (UK) »
Would anyone have access to the 1841 census for Suffolk  to look up the following for me :

James TURNER born C1806 maybe later
and his sister
Sarah TURNER born in Old Buckenham, Norfolk in C1819.

They both married after 1841 so maybe they could both be living at home with their parents.

Thank you

There are 9 James Turners born in Suffolk between 1801 and 1811 in the 1841 Suffolk census.  Do you know the name of his wife, to narrow it down a bit ?  Turner is a very prolific surname in Suffolk - I have some in my tree.

Also, the 1841 census does not give place of birth, so where would Sarah be living in 1841 ?

Nick29,

James wife was Eliza SMITH and they married in 1848.

Re Sarah - I know she was born in Norfolk but her Husband was born in Suffolk so I thought they may have spent some time there.

They did later live in Norfolk according to the 1881 census.

I have also posted a request on the Norfolk board in case Sarah was still there in 1841.

Unfortunately when you're researching common names, it not a case of finding a person, it's a case of finding the right one from lots of candidates.  If James didn't marry until 1848, then his wife's name is not going to help in trying to find him in 1841.  Unless you can narrow him down to a particular area of Suffok.  If you can find him on the 1851 census, there's a fair chance he won't be too far away on the 1841 census.  Also, the 1841 doesn't show relationships within households, which makes it even tougher.

Nick,

Of those 9 James Turners you mentioned in the 1841 census did any of them have a sister named Sarah who would have been about 22 in 1841 ?

Well, there is an entry in Thorndon, Suffolk which has the following entries......

John Turner age 33, Ag Lab, born in this county = yes.
Sarah Turner age 23, born in this county = yes

but there is also a

Thomas Turner, 10 months, born in this county = yes

So, I don't think these 2 were brother and sister (relationships are not given in the 1841 census)

There are no more instances of a John Turner and a Sarah Turner of the ages given (plus or minus 5 years) occupying the same household in Suffolk.

Nick,

It is James Turner, not John,  that I am looking for. His occupation when he married in 1848 was a Silk Merchant.

Does this fit with any of the 9 James that you mentioned in your first post that were born between 1801 to 1811 ?

Sorry about that !   I wondered why there appeared to be many more matches the second time around  ::)

I've checked the 9 James Turners, none of them has a Sarah living in the same household.  Women quite often went into domestic service before getting married, so you may find Sarah just about anywhere, if that's the case.

Incidentally, do you have James and Sarah together in the 1851 census ?  I just wondered how you had established that they were siblings.

Nick,

This is a long story.

The son of James was James Smith Turner and we have always thought that the middle of Smith came from the Mother's line as she was Eliza Smith but while James jnr. was in South Africa he wrote home a lot to his Uncle and Aunt Christopher William Smith who was born in Bury, Suffolk and Sarah who was born in Buckenham, Norfolk. (I have James Smith Turner's original letter diary)

Recently my Cousin looked up marriages of a Christopher Smith to a Sarah and he found 4, one was to a Sarah Turner in Norfolk, so we thought we would see if the Smith as a middle name came from his Uncle as they were obviously very close going by the letters that James wrote. Also he lived with his Uncle and Aunt for some time.

I hope this explains it simply,

Cheers,
Christine
PS Re your query on the 1851 census, they were both married by then assuming that the marriage was to the Sarah Turner which was in 1844.
James married in 1848 to Eliza.
