Arrival in Queensland Help - HANIFY
« on: Wednesday 03 June 09 09:50 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me with my family who arrived in Australia, most probably Queensland.
They were John Hanify & his wife Ellen (Sheridan). They were married 1883 in Ireland and their first recorded child was born & died in March 1885 in Queensland.
So they must have arrived between 1883 & 1885.
I have not been able to find them on any shipping lists.

I can find a 'Catherine Hanify' that arrived in Sydney NSW as an assisted immigrant aboard the ship "HEREFORD" in 1878 aged 22 years. State Records NSW

Going by FamilySearch there are some HANIFY family members (possibly related to your bunch) that travelled from Victoria to settle in Brisbane"
Their port of arrival may have been Melbourne Vic.

Addendum:
My Google search reveals that there may have been an earlier NZ connection -
[This could explain your difficulty in fiinding the shipping records.

you  can search this wonderfull resource on line  for Hanify.  I  noted  that there were several articles on Hugo Page Hanify :o

Do  you  have  their death certificates  that often says how long in the colony.

Unfortunately  the Qld Immigration  Indexs that are on line are not working at  the moment  though

Thanks to everybody !!!
I have looked at most of these suggested links .
I have birth & death certificates from Queensland archives, no help.
Maybe they did come via New Zealand!! I have other family who did and have never been able to find their travel records.
It's such a shame we don't get interested in family history before all our older family members depart!!

Hi Alberta - am just learning how to use this - Ellen Hanify was my great grandmother - quite a character she was too I beleive.  She married Alfred Williams in 1907.  He was later killed in an accident and she married John Johnson in the 1920's.  Ellen died in Griffitn NSW in 1963.  Ellen's mother was also called Ellen - she was the daughter of Thomas Sheridan and Catherine Halloran.  She married John Hanify in 1881 in Loughreagh, Galway, Ireland.  The date I have for arrival in Australia is 1884 but I cannot remember where I got this from.  Ellen died in Roma on the 2/1/1907.  I hae her date of birth as 1854 and birthplace as Kiltullagh.  I you want to email me I am happy to send you a photo of my g/grandmother Ellen /Hanify/Williams/Johnson.  I also one of Mary Ann Hanify but have to find it!!!!  Ken
