elliotts in Donegal
« on: Wednesday 23 February 05 23:42 GMT (UK) »
My wifes grandfather was George Elliott born 1859 approx. From his wedding (1881 Liverpool)certificate it says he came from Belfast and his father was John who was a farmer.

On the 1901 census it gives his birthplace as Donegal

Can anyone advise on how to research further.

Thanks
Mike

Ulster Historical Foundation have a birth  register entry for a George Elliott in County Antrim 1855...might be your chap, if he was born Belfast (mind you, wonder why Census said Donegal which is on the west coast). It costs £10 for credits to view same. They also have some John Elliotts marrying in County Antrim in 1850, 1851 and 1856...so this might tie-in.

Mike,

Does the entry on the marriage certificate refer to his birthplace or just his residence at the time of his marriage?  Is there a specific  birthplace in the 1891 census?  Does the 1901 census specify whether it's referring to Donegal (the specific town) or County Donegal in general?

The following site might give you some leads:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegal/

There is a Rootsweb mailing list for County Donegal at:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/IRL/DONEGALEIRE.html

The following site suggests (unfortunately) that Elliott was a common name in Co Donegal:
http://irelandgenealogyprojects.rootsweb.com/Old/Donegal.htm

A search of the Irish phone directory brings up 24 ELLIOTTs and 4 ELLIOTs in Co Donegal:

Good luck - you will probably need it!

Mike,

I hope this does not add to your state of confusion. These two URLs are from the Donegal census of 1901. John Elliott, in the Drumawark census, was born about the same time as your George. John Elliott, in the Raneely census, also fits the same time scale. It is possible that George moved to Belfast to find work and the farm may have been inherited by a brother The combination of the Christian name John with the surname Elliott are very common in the north west area of Ireland so you may have to do a lot of research and elimination. I would be inclined to restrict the search to the Donegal area.
