Salisbury (London Road) Cemetery
« on: Thursday 04 June 09 02:08 BST (UK) »
Hi.

Does anyone have any idea of how I can go about finding out the plot numbers of graves in the Salisbury (London Road) cemetery.  There are quite a few thousand buriels here so I was quite lucky to find any ancestors graves at all.

Sadly though like most cemeteries some headstones are in such poor shape, many completely unreadable, some gone completely and others lying flat (face down of course) so you don't know who is in there all of which makes searching very difficult.

Thanks

Ali

Hello Ali,

My guess is that the county archives in Chippenham may have some records of plots.   Ask the Local Studies group - their email contact is on the Archives site, I find always find them very helpful.  As it is a cemetary, you could also try Wiltshire County Council who may be able to tell you something.

Good luck

Thank You LC.

I have now emailed the archives and they have informed me they do have this information.  They don't have a plan sadly but at least I will have some idea of which alphabetical area out of the 8 in the cemetery to look.

Hi Ali,

Glad I was of some help.  Still think it is worth asking Wilts County Council, they should have a plan - going back how far though, I don't know.  They are the ones who's responsibility it is to keep a plan ... I think.

Ali,

Salisbury Local Studies Library (part of the main Library) has the plan and the indexes (on fiche)

One of the entrances to the Cemetery has a map of the site sub-divided in the various areas.

The indexes also indicate which plots still had/have headstones.

Really.  Oh that's interesting to know Kanksar.  I shall have to pay the library a visit.  Probably easier than going to Chippenham first and then back to Salisbury since I could make a day of it, library first, then the cemetery.

Thanks very much

Ali
