Muster image - What does it say? Solved
« on: Thursday 04 June 09 19:51 BST (UK) »
Could someone tell me what the word above Halifax is in this image please? I do have my own idea but would like confirmation, or not as the case may be!

No, nothing like it appears in that or any other column.

Run? Maybe he jumped ship.

That is what I was hoping someone else would see, I think (and hope) that it says Run as well.

Hi

I think it's the name of the ship he went to : RMS  HALIFAX
http://www.immigrantships.net/halifaxlists/halifaxarr_depart_01.html

Lots of ship have the prefix: RMS (including the Titanic!)

Cheers

I'd never seen that prefix - that's why I asked if the mysterious word appeared anywhere else - if it appears before the name of other vessels then that would more or less prove it's RMS.

Do we know that Halifax definitely refers to the ship and not to the place?

Do any of the other entries show a capital letter R? Is it the same as this one? Given the limited amount of this person's handwriting which is here it just seems rather ill-defined, also the final letter seems to end on a full upstroke, not consistent with the other letter "n"s we see here. Just a thought.

If it were RMS, wouldn't it be written all in capitals or all in lower case?
To me, the combination of up- and downstrokes look more consistent with how one would write Run.
