Parents of Leonora RANDOLPH
« on: Thursday 04 June 09 21:41 BST (UK) »
I am trying to ascertain the parentage of my gt. gt. grandmother.

Eleanora RANDOLPH was bapt. 27 May 1821 at Walcott, Bath, daughter of James, a carpenter, and Mary RANDOLPH, Upper Bristol Road, Bath.   The word 'carpenter' verified by Somerset Record Office.

At her marriage on 20 Feb. 1848 at St Marylebone, London, to William STANDEN she is Leonora Penelope RANDOLPH, father James RANDOLPH, deceased.  Witnesses to the marriage are Henry and Eliza RANDOLPH.
When Henry married Eliza in 1837 he is Henry Orange RANDOLPH, father James RANDOLPH, solicitor.

The Birth Cert. of one of William and Leonora's children has mother as Leonora Penelope Orange STANDEN, formerly RANDOLPH.

I have been unable to find the birth or Bapt. of Henry RANDOLPH.

So who and what was James RANDOLPH?

STANDEN,  RANDOLPH

Hi

It's strange that she marries as Leonora Penelope and shows both those names on her childs birth cert plus the extra name of Orange - yet the christening entry is just Eleanora

1841 census shows her as Penelope

Are you sure you have the correct baptismal record?

She uses Penelope and Leonora in the censuses and gives birthplace as Bath. Did she call any of her children Orange?

Hello lustremounter,
Apologies for not welcoming you earlier.  ::)

http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/BathNES/leisureandculture/localhistoryheritage/familyhistory/

shows that there may be directories for Bath - you could try there to see if James is mentioned as a carpenter or solicitor.

best wishes

Hello lustremounter,

There is a marriage on Freereg for James RANDOLPH. Milverton, bachelor, to Mary WITHERELL, spinster of Pilton at Aller, St Andrew, on 13/01/1794. Married by Licence.

This couple had a number of children baptised in Milverton from 1794 onwards. These included a James RANDOLPH baptised 16/09/1801.

James RANDOLPH, senior, is shownas being Reverend James RANDOLPH.

I can see Eleanora's baptism in Walcot in 1821. There are other children being baptised to couples with the name of RANDOLPH round there but no others to James and Mary in Walcot.

I wonder if this is the same couple as the James and Mary who had children baptised in Milverton.

No trace of Henry either.

I do wonder if Henry and Eleanora are from 2 different families, ie not brother and sister but another relationship. Have you tried tracking Henry and possibly James RANDOLPH in the census returns? Their place of birth might give you some clues so as you can pursue further.

Jo

Hello all,
I wonder if this is the James that Jo refers to:

1841 HO107; Piece 951; Book: 8;  Folio: 24; Page: 8

Lancaster Fort Milverton
James Randolph 40 yrs Attorney at Law born in county
Flora Randolph 45 yrs not born in county

plus two servants
I'm not sure if this has any relevance but interesting re occupation.

1851 has Henry as born in Bath and Milverton is a long way from there  ???

1841  HO107; Piece 680; Book: 4;Folio: 9.

Paddington Street St Marylebone

Henry Randolph 25 yrs house agent
Eliza 26 yrs
Helen 3 yrs
Eliza 15 yrs
Catherine 6 months
all born in county  (Middlesex)

As I said earlier 1851 has Henry born in Bath.
Who is Eliza 15 yrs?? I was hoping that she was Eleonora in disguise but there is a Penelope Randolph b 1821 and not in county in St Bartholomew the Great Parish London. She is a female servant.

Hello again,

The 1851 has a Mary RANDOLPH in Bermondsey and describes as "mother in law" she is aged 55 and a widow, born Bath.

The family is as follows:

George MURRAY head, mar, aged 26, candle manufacturer, born Middlesex, St George.
Clara MURRAY wife, aged 22, born Somerset, Bath.
George MURRAY, son, aged, 7months, born Middlesex, St George.
Mary RANDOPLH, widow, aged 55, born Bath.

Reference: HO107 1562 Page 1.

Could she be the widow of Eleanora's father? That would fit with the marriage certificate, her father being deceased in 1848.

The 1861 has a number of people born Bath in Walcot. I think this may be one where a visit to the Record Office will be necessary to establish the full facts.
