Isle of Man census...anywhere from 1800-1850'w
« on: Thursday 24 February 05 04:26 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find a John C. Kew (Kewn?) born not sure where abt. [May 28] 1829 (maybe earlier, he had a younger bride, so may have lied), lived in Liverpool, but the family was supposed to have originally come from the Isle of Man.  I'm a Yank, so know nothing of how the government is set up there, but the story was that his father (grandfather?) was mayor?  Conceivably could have been a father-in-law.  Rest of the story is that he came to Canada (Nova Scotia) leaving a "grown family" behind in Liverpool.

Canadian census has his date of emigration as 1864, if he's being honest.  Supposedly came over with a daughter, Emily, from his first marriage, and also a second wife (Ann?).  She either returned without him or died.  If she returned, did she die before he married the third time in 1876?  His parents were John and Elizabeth (Kelly?) --this he put on paper, though the story always was that his father married 'Agnes Kelly of Dublin' (possibly Elizabeth Agnes, Agnes Elizabeth?).  1901 Census has his religion as 'Universalist'.  Anyway, we have NEVER been able to get a good line on this guy, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Maggie,

I also have KEWN ancestors in Lancashire, who supposedly came from the Isle of Man (although I have never been able to prove this). However, I noted you thought you knew your John KEWN's mother's maiden name may be an Elizabeth KELLY.

So I had a look at the IGI. Have you seen this christening entry on the IGI. The age agrees :

JOHN KEWIN  Male Christening:  21 NOV 1830   Braddan, Isle Of Man, England
Parents:   Father:  JOHN KEWIN  &   Mother:  ELIZTH KELLY    Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. Source Information:
Batch No.:  Dates:  Source Call No.:  Type:  Printout Call No.:
C038021  1626 - 1849  0106708   Film  6909377
Film or fiche number 0106708  ;Film/fiche search results
Parish register transcripts of Kirk-Braddan, 1624-1883.  Church of England. Parish Church of Kirk-Braddan (Isle of Man)

I also found the marriage for this couple :
JOHN KEWN    Male  Marriages:   Spouse:  ELIZABETH KELLY
Marriage:  28 NOV 1829   Braddan, Isle Of Man, England  Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record.
Source Information:
Batch No.:  Dates:  Source Call No.:  Type:  Printout Call No.:
M038021  1683 - 1733  0106708   Film  6909378   Film
M038021  1733 - 1817  0106709   Film  NONE
M038021  1817 - 1844  0106710   Film  NONE

I have not personally researched Isle of Man records, however perhaps someone could advise you if this film would give details of their parents names possibly given at the time of their marriage?

I checked but could see not siblings baptised to John Snr and Elizabeth, nor could I find a christening for John Snr in the same Parish. However, there were quite a few Elizabeth Kelly's christened in the Parish of the correct age to be John's mother.

I hope some of this proves of help to you.
Good Luck with your search,
Kindest Regards, Amanda

A 1829 marriage will not give father's names but will give which parish each person came from (usually).  Witnesses might give you some clues but that is about all you will get.

I would try asking for an 1841 & 1851 census look-up (try message board at www.isle-of-man.com/cgi-bin/interests/genealogy/bulletin/ or Brian Lawson at www.lawsons.ca) which will at least give you their approximate ages and parish of birth.

The surnames KEWN, KEWNE, KEWIN, KEWINE appear to be variants of same name on the Island.  Don't see KEW much.
