1831 and 1841 Census lookup please
« on: Thursday 24 February 05 05:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can someone please lookup the following in the address in the 1831 and 1841 Census?

Either 6 or 8 Lancaster Street, Lewes, (St john sub castro).  the name should be LEVETT.

I am interesting in all people in the house whether or not they are of that name or not.

Kind regards
Rick

Was there an 1831 census for Lewes?   I doubt it.   Sussex Family History Group might know if there is an index for the 1841 otherwise it means searching the film.  www.sfhg.org.uk   Lewes Record Office would help too. (Tel 01273 482349)

Hi there Rick & Sillgen

Firstly, Sillgen, yes there is a 1831 census for Lewes that still survives - quite a few places in Sussex kept copies of the census in the 'parish chest' e.g Ticehurst kept copies from 1801 onwards.

Rick, How are you, and you're still trying to find your Levetts.

The 1831 census for St John Sub Castro lists just 1 Levett

Edmund Levett, Labourer, 1 Family, 4 Males, 3 Females - but unfortunately no address.

Hi Chris,

Many, many thanks for that.  The LEVETTs are going slowly at this point in time mainly due to commitments elsewhere but I intend to make a bigger effort on them in the second half of this year.  If only I could find the link between John LEVETT in Sussex and John SMITH in Tasmania.  John LEVETT did come out here as a convict but no link has been found.

I assuming that the details mean Edmund plus wife Sarah and 4 male and 3 female children.  If it does then it fits nicely.

On a slightly off topic.  The wife Sarah was a GATES and she had an illigitimate child Stephen born 1798 in Lewes.  He married an Elizabeth ISLES at some stage.  She was born about 1800 in Sussex.  Would you be able to find them in the Census data please?  I have nothing more on them.

Kind regards
Rick

Just read your reply again

"assuming that the details mean Edmund plus wife Sarah and 4 male and 3 female children.  If it does then it fits nicely."

The way I read it is that there were a total of 4 males and 3 females in the household including Edmund & Sarah - which means the children are 3 boys and 2 girls

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for that about Stephen Gates.  Now I can look on the Census and see what happened to them.

I was hoping that you would not say that about the Census.

Father:  Edmund died 1858.
Mother:  Sarah died 1848.

Children:
Thomas Vinall died 1820.
Sarah born 1810 in Lewes.  Know nothing more.
Mary born 1812 in Lewes.  Married 1834.
Edmund Ryder born 1814 in Lewes.  Married 1838.
William born 1861 in Lewes.  Did not marry.  Died in 1851.  Was still at Lancaster Street.
Elizabeth born 1819.  Had child when unmarried in 1843.  Was still at Lancaster Street.
John born 1821.  Lived at Lancaster Street until sent to Australia.
Thomas Gates born 1823. Married 1846.  Still at Lancaster Street.

So that gives me 5 males and 4 females.  So 1 male and 1 female must have been elsewhere at the time of the Census.  At a rough guesss it could be Edmund and Sarah.

I need to look further.

Many thanks.

Kind regards
Rick
