Hello Jane

It depends which system you are using.  I am using Vista.

It's the task bar

Right click/properties/notification area/customise = shows a list of items you want to show or hide, then select and apply.

From what I remember I think XP does not have the notification area, just "customise" - look in 'past items' then "you have new email" click on the email icon then you have the choice of

Always show = yes
Hide
Hide when inactive

My machine sometimes forgets too so I have to go in reset it.

If that doesn't work then you should check your email client options.

Click on Tools >> Options  >> Email Options  >> Advanced Options

There should be a section called When New Items Arrive in my Inbox.
I've also got a Desktop Alert Settings button with more options.

I use Outlook so my setup might me slightly different from yours but they are likely to be similar because they are both written by Microsoft.

Oh Downside I feel totally useless..

Click on Tools >> Options  >> Email Options  >> Advanced Options

I did this but couldnt see where it said "email options" but clicked on advance but there was nothing like "When new items arrive in my inbox"

Thanks for your help

From memory (as I am using Vista) can you not right click on the search button, click properties, select the taskbar tab, then customize. From here find the mail icon and select the 'always show' option.

In XP go to Control Panel. Open "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties".
Click the Taskbar tab.
In the Notification area tick the box to hide inactive icons.
Click Customise.
Scroll down until you see the envelope icon and click on it.
In the drop down box that appears click on "Always show" then OK.
Apply and OK.
When e-mail arrives you should see the envelope icon in the notification area at the bottom right of your screen.
