Eliza DUDLEY help needed please
« on: Monday 08 June 09 14:51 BST (UK) »
My wife's 4 x great grandmother Eliza DUDLEY age 34 yrs(nee MEHEGAN) widowed to William Guilford DUDLEY (don't know anything about William) set sail for Australia 30/9/1857 on board the "Stebonheath" with her 3 children Jane abt 14
George T abt 13
Mary Ann abt 11
How game was this lady?
She arrived Sydney 27 feb 1858.
Can anyone please help with the Irish end of the family as maybe when Eliza & William were mar. or when William died etc. I have Eliza's parents as being :
Daniel Mehegan & Mary Thompson. On Eliza's shipping details is says from Co Cork.
Appreciate the help of a good detective.

Anderson.
In an effort to find any Irish ancestors when one only has sketchy details my advice is to look for some commonality of the names against the Civil Parish and the townlands using Griffith's Valuation. I had a look at the Griffith's Valuation for you and found the following names which perhaps you may consider researching further.

In the Civil Parish of Youghal (R. C. Parish of the same name) there was...
Robert Dudley from the townland of Youghal Lands and a
Mary Mehegan from the townland of Williamstown.

In the Civil Parish of St. Nicholas (R.C. Parish of St. Finbarr's - Cork City)  there was...
Denis Mehegan from the townland of Knockrea, a
Jeremiah Mehegan from the townland of Raheen and Cooleen, a
Joshua Thompson from Greenfield Lane (off Cove Street), and a
Robert Thompson from Abbey Street.

It may be from the information above that your Mehegan's and Thompson's were from Cork City.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks for that John. Gives me a good place to start for someone who doesn't know where to start.

For anyone who had ancestors on the voyage of the Stebonheath which arrived in Sydney on 22/2/1858 I have done extensive research on this notorious voyage and am happy to share it through my website:    http://www.thenoones.id.au/

I know it has been awhile since you posted the last comment but was just wondering if you made any progress. I am from Co.Cork and our Family name is Dudley. It is a uncommon name in Ireland and is a uncommon surname worldwide really. I am living in Sydney myself now and would be interested to hear if I had ancestors that settled here. I am unfamilar with our family tree. On a recent trip to Perth I found my name on the war memorial F.J.Dudley for both the first and second world war's. Thinking maybe father and son and would love to know what the F stood for or if I was someway related. My first name is Finbarr which is Irish but uncommon outside Co.Cork so the combination of both first and last uncommon names should make it easier to follow?

Hi

I'm currently researching the Dudleys in my family and your post about Eliza caught my eye because of the reference to William GUILFORD Dudley - it is the spelling of Guilford that is important.

Guilford is a "family" name in my family and is said to originate from or be associated with Sir Guilford Dudley and the Dukes of Northumberland. That may just be a romantic dream.

However, and more pertinent to you perhaps is the following line:

William and Margaret Dudley had 4 children - William, Margaret, Jane (dob abt 1829 and my ancestor) and Elijah (or Eleazah). I wonder if their son William is your William Guilford Dudley - given Jane's dob it would fit with your time lime.

Jane's great grandson was GUILFORD Ronald Edwards (my great uncle Ron - I am also related to Jane directly through my grandfather whose sister married said great uncle Ron, we don;t have two heads despite the sanguinity)

Best wishes

Alison

Oh, and I noted your interest in Watson.

Said grandfather was John Francis Watson - whose father was a Patrick William Watson from Aberdeen.
