Hello Wini

Regret that I'm unable to tell you what the "Gebbie" connection is with my subject, but, when I find out I'll let you know!

"Gebbie" is, I understand, generally used as a name for a male, so, I think it was a family name for one my of my subject's ancestors.

There are 8 "Gebbie" entries in the White Pages for Wellington, New Zealand, and 53 for the entire country.   Not many in the context of > 4 million people.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Regards

Ross

Hi All  :)

From the information that has been found so far, there is this possible entry for mother Margaret Campbell on IGI:

MARGARET CAMPBELL  Christening: 06 MAY 1837 Eaglesham, Renfrew
Parents DUNCAN CAMPBELL and MARGARET GEBBIE

Ross, the marriage entry found by Steve would confirm parent details including full mothers' names for bride and groom, ages etc. to let you verify their origins and trace them back to their families.

This may be the family in 1881:

Robert Sutherland 41, Engine Driver, (Railway), b. Strathbungo, Renfrewshire
Margt Sutherland 43, b. Eaglesham
James Sutherland 16, b. Strathbungo, Renfrewshire
Robert Sutherland 9, b. Glasgow
Margt Sutherland 6, b. Glasgow
Thomas Munro 41, visitor, pensioner, b. Glasgow

Address: 53 Regent St, Greenock Middle, Renfrewshire

Apart from the Duncan son b. 1873 found by Steve, there looks to have been a Robert born to this couple in 1872 in Cathcart Renfrewshire which could fit with the entry above.

If we have the right family above, the son James above would indicate a potential first marriage for either Robert or Margaret perhaps. The marriage cert from 1871 would normally show whether either party was a widow/er. Can't find them as yet in 1871 following their marriage in February from Steve's notes.

Well done Monica - give me a minute on the IGI  - when I did my first search it came up with another child - but different mother.

Mmh...    there is a Robert Sutherland and an Annie McIver having children (6), at about the same time in the same area.  Last child however born in 1873.  That's the one which came to mind.  They don't however match with your census find. Have just done a children  search from 1860 to 1880 for a Robert Sutherland a Margaret Campbell and get the following. (I'd previously gone and searched off the batch no. of Margaret.  There may have been chldren born after 1875 which don't show on the IGI

ROBERT SUTHERLAND Birth: 29 JAN 1872 Cathcart, Renfrew, Scotland
DUNCAN CAMPBELL SUTHERLAND Birth: 08 MAR 1873 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
MARGARET GEBBIE SUTHERLAND  Birth: 13 NOV 1874 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

That's great Ev, certainly looks a possibility for Robert Snr with his family  :)

Struggling to see Robert and Margaret in 1871, also for 1891 (but they may have emigrated by now?)

Hello all!

I've received the certificate that Steve sent me (which is fantastic!) and am very grateful to both ev and Monica for the information that they have provided.

This genealogy research is all a lot new to me and I think that I'm going to be a bit slow in making some of the connections, but, I will get there!

It will take me a little while to digest the data you've sent, and to figure out where I should look next, but, you have given me an amazingly helpful start to a project that I was in danger of abandoning.

RC is a great community and I am delighted to be acquainted.

Thank you all again.  I'm looking forward to continuing conversation.

Kind regards

Ross
