Graveyard Mapping
« on: Wednesday 10 June 09 12:13 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know of any websites that have graveyard maps on them?

In particular, St Woolos Cemetary in Newport, Gwent, but anywhere in general as well.

Found a wonderful map in Gloucestershire that helped immensely and saved loads of time.

Hoping someone can help - and thanks

Julie

It has been my experience that graveyard maps are few and far between, and if they do exist they will be at the church, cemetery, crematorium etc.

My first point of contact would be the above in the appropiate county town etc

When needing to produce a plan of a churchyard to mark the approximate position of a family grave to pass on to other family members, I have found it useful to start with a Google satelite shot at the maximum magnification.
Download the image onto PAINT. Using a suitable bright colour, I then trace the perimeter and the outline of the church and then erase everything else. The result is a workable plan although I accept that it will be a bit distorted. My relations have always been able to find the grave.

Hi Julie,
Thanks for the compliment but it is not really very clever. It is just a slog for it takes a long time to remove all the unwanted colour. I applied this to Broad  Blunsdon and others nearby in Wiltshire.
Toby.
