There is a death of a Joseph Pilling aged 0 , 1st quarter 1901 Wigan 8C 75, but not sure about this as your Joseph appeared in the 1901 census.

Possible marriage.

Joseph A Pilling
2Q 1925   Wigan  Greater Manchester, Lancashire  8c  206
Spouse: Lily Jameson

There are three children in 1911 census, Cecilia, Laurence and Arthur. I think Arthur could well be the Joseph Arthur Pilling you are looking for.

If you are certain he died the only death of an Joseph Pelling born 1901 is the one I quoted. I checked between 1901 and 1911 and all the others were too old, that is the only one born in 1901.

However as the 1901 census was taken on the 31st March and he is on it, that can't be him. so I think  Laurina could be on the right track.
