Decipher Naval record, please?
« on: Thursday 11 June 09 14:49 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I downloaded an image of my G-Grandfather's Naval record a while back and have just dug it out to show a relative - some of the writing is hard to decipher, but some of it is in abbreviations. Can someone tell me what is recorded in the colum regarding character - "Exmp" and "Exy" I take to be "exemplary"  but what does "I (J?) only" mean?

Also, in the Remarks column - any ideas what "J.B.1859" may refer to? (This seems to refer to a period of service aboard " HMS Glasgow" from 01/01/1873 - 20/07/1875 see 2nd image)

A further part of the document - what do you think is the name between Wye and Asia?

G-Grandad, Edward Meyers, seems to have been on the Asia three times! Although he's listed here on the Warrior between 22/09/1877-22/10/1877, I've been told he was on the Warrior, part of an escort, when Princess Alexandra came to England for her marriage to the then Prince of Wales, 1863. I'll have to see if I can find any earlier record of G-Grandad's naval career to confirm this!

Meantime, I'm trying to see if I can locate anything about these ships during the time when Edward would have served on them - I found him on the 1861 census serving on Arrogant, but that's all so far!

I would love to know where you found these records. Are they on-line as I have been searching for one of my 'Step' G father's Naval Records.

Hi, looking!
Someone on RC directed me to them on National Archives Database

see:

Other post-ers on the thread gave me an idea where to look - but other than the document I found, paid for and downloaded, I found the site tricky to negotiate - I spent a lot of time going round in circles. But I might go back and have another look!

Good luck with your research!

Hi

Just guessing but I suspect that character was recorded on some standard scale that might have run:

Exemplary
Very good
Good only (g only)
Satisfactory (S)
....

JE 1859 is perhaps the initials of a clerk and the date when the first entries on this document were copied from an earlier document.

All the best

Aberdeenshire - Chalmers, Crocker, Dalrymple, Kelman
Fife - Co?per, Dun, Jackson
NE England - Harland, Hasted, Heaviside, Longridge, Thompson
SE England - Drawbridge, Hall, Hayward, Howard, Newell, Seward, Slade, Smith

Certainly looks like Argus.

Have a look at this site:

http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Naval.html

You can find out some information about 19th cenutry Navy vessels, their whereabouts etc.  Some more complete than others, but very useful nonetheless.

Thankyou for your replies, everyone!

Now I've looked at it again I think I agree the ship's name could be Argus.

I will have a really good look at the info via the link, little Nell - you never know what gem might turn up!

Still trying to find out what Edward was doing prior to the details on this document - I'm certain he was already in the Navy from as early as 1861, if not before!

Thanks all!

 ;D
