Removing sticky tape from letter
« on: Friday 12 June 09 07:46 BST (UK) »
Could someone please remove the sticky tape from this valuable letter.

The letter was sent to my grandfather from and Italian Duchess after he retuned the flag of her son who died whilst a prisoner of war in North Africa.

Although the flag was of the enemy, my grandfather had compassion for the prisoner's mother back home.
Much appreciated

In the long term, the adhesive can seep into paper, leaving irreversible yellow or brown discoloration.   :(

Just a thought; - perhaps one of our clever restorers could do something with this, if it were posted on the Photo Dating & Restoration board?

It may need to be re-scanned, at 300-600dpi, though - it will come out clearer, and cause less eye-strain for anyone attempting to improve it for you  ;)
I live in Sydney, Australia, and I'm researching: Powell, Tatham, Dunbar, Dixon, Mackwood, Kinnear, Mitchell, Morgan, Delves, & Anderson

When the brown stain is removed the writing is not legible. (its difficult in the rest)

Can you post  a higher resolution scan, where the writing is easily readable on the message board, or e-mail me a hi-res if it is too big to post here. (500 limit)

Something can be done but not at 200dpi.

If you know somebody with a good digital camera you may find a photo is clearer, we do this now rather than scan when its just one item.

Final effort - file on disc prints at a4.

All writing overwritten onto new clear background.

Original was repaired tape removed an left as is, but this effort is for record purposes only. So please don't think the original has been trashed by over restoring - it has not.

Thanks to all who took the trouble to have a go and advise.

Emjaybee is a star and has done a wonderful job in restoring this precious document.  I realise that this is for the record only, but it is still nice to have a good copy.

Many thanks
