I need to spend a few days arranging my notes - things moved too quick - i'm still spinning! - you two girls are the best!

It struck me as odd - that we haven't had the appearence of Richard on any of the census records. ???
So he was either....  Living with someone else (and had another family on the side)  :-[,  was in the forces ... or on his majesty's pleasure on a regular occurence!!

Excuse me if I'm duplicating, I can see the 1851 that you found Trish, but not the 1841:

1841 HO107  Piece 859 Book 3 Folio 6 Page 4
Rock, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
CLAYTON
Mary Ann  30  Getting Ling   ???
Eliza      10
Joseph    3
Maria    1
all born Nottinghamshire

Please could you look at Mary Ann's occupation, Trish?

Posting it so Sonja can see it

Wondered if Richard had already died and she was on Parish Relief, or was she a heather (ling) gatherer  :-\

Think you are right. there is a death Dec 1839 in Mansfield, for a Richard Clayton, 15 352.

Youngest child on 1851 Joseph is 9, could she have ben pregnant when he died?

Aah, it's possible, the death cert will give date of course

Occupations on the pages around her are things like FWK (frame work knitter) or cotton workers, seamstress, charwoman....

nothing else like her occupation  ???

Think if pregnant, that would have been with Maria aged 1 on 1841

Am scouring lists of old occupations, and widows allowances!
