Reviving this old thread in the hope that Lodger or another Rootchatter with access to the Carnwarth records see this.

Is there a burial for a William Ramsay sometime between 1841 and 1851? He was aged between 10 and 20 and from Forth.
Also looking for his grandfather James Donaldson who died between 1845 and 1851, again probably in Forth.
thank you!

No William Ramsay but there is a Thomas Ramsay of Forth aged 22 died on 2nd May 1848 of Consumption.
There is a James Donaldson listed died on 26th February 1851 aged 70 of Consumption (there is no location for his residence given)

Extracted from the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire pre-1855  Monumental Inscriptions, by Sheila A. Scott.

Carnwath churchyard.

No.247.  "Erected by William Ramsay, Forth in memory of his son William who died 5th January 1851 aged 20 years. Also his father-in-law William Donaldson who died 22nd February 1851 aged 76 years".

There is a Ramsay in the next grave, perhaps just a coincidence, Christina Ramsay, died 6th February 1905 aged 78 years (she died at Carluke) widow of James Tervit. If you need that inscription just let me know.

Thank you RJ and Lodger for your very speedy replies!

I think the William Ramsay MI is the one I was looking for. Bit confused about his father in law being William Donaldson though, as he's James Donaldson on records I've seen. Interesting that a James died a few days earlier than the date on the gravestone for William.

I don't think Christina is connected but I will make a note in case I find a link. William senior and his family were in Stane, Cambusnethan by 1861.

I just double-checked and he's definitely William (although "Wm" was used) on the MI book but it may have been wrongly transcribed.

I have your family in the Cambusnethan cemetery records.
Their plot is in the oldest section of the "modern" cemetery, it is called Low Public and opened in 1861.
The Ramsay lair is number 19, so they would have been one of the first to purchase a lair.
I also have a picture of the stone, it has been cleaned-up, perhaps by you or another family member?
The burial records I have finish at 1917, sorry.
All dates are of interment.

JOHN RAMSAY, Stane, aged 3 weeks.
Parents - James Ramsay & Elizabeth Meek.
Interred in Low Public 19, 28th October 1861.

WILLIAM RAMSAY, Stane, aged 4 years.
Parents - James Ramsay & Elizabeth Meek.
Interred in Low Public 19, 16th May 1863.

MARY ANN WALLACE RAMSAY, Stane, aged 1 year.
Parents - James Ramsay & Elizabeth Meek.
Interred in Low Public 19, 18th January 1864.

JAMES RAMSAY, grocer, 4 Main Street, Stane. Aged 82 years. Widower.
Parents - William Ramsay & Eleanor Donaldson.
Interred in Low Public, 3rd January 1916.

I think this must have been a double lair, probably 19 and 20. I can't find any reference to 20 in the records.

Amazing, thank you so much Lodger.
I didn't know anything about this family memorial. Now I'm wondering who cleaned it up!
