I thought it looked like Shop ??

If you look further down the page, there are several other words starting with the letter "s" and these compare well with the first letter of the word in question.  Fairly certain that the next one is an "h".

Might be wrong tho... it's happened before ( shhh, don't tell anyone though ) ;D ;D ;D

LKL Sorry, it's Folio 55 Isle of Man.

& Karenlee, I think you will be right  :) I have just found Sarah in 1901 and she is listed as a stationer, shopkeeper.

Thank-you both

Hi

The 1891 - definitely says stationer to me - just that the dot of the 'i' is a bit adrift  :)

after Stationer, could it be &c - an abbreviation for 'etc'  ?

Cheers
AMBLY

added: and in looking at the first t in 'stationer', compare with the occupation of Beatrice E (DUTTON?)  at Nr 6.  - how the word 'servant' has been written, esp. the 't'.  And how he has written tobacconist, above that too.
