gravestone and deed conflict?
« on: Saturday 13 June 09 13:01 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have been doing my family tree for a short time and have recently started on the Clarke side of my tree. My family for 3 generations are buried at my local cemetary so with the stones and the info from my nan, who is Clarke by marriage and the only person I have for info, I started to build up. She had always told me that there was room for 4 in the grave where my G Grandfather and GG grandfather and mother were buried, but only 3 were ever put there. She told me my Grandad told her this. The gravestone contains 3 names which tallied with this. However, on my starting my tree she dug out the deeds on the grave and to our surprise there were 4 names on there. There is an extra name we can't seem to place with dates and the name is the same as my G G Grandfather and Grandfather, which makes it more confusing as this is a common family name. Could there be a mistake on the deed or is this another family member we have not known about? It's all thrown me a bit and I don't see how I could solve the puzzle, specially since the 4th person isn't even mentioned on the stone?

Any help appreciated and further info can be provided if it would help?

I wonder if it was an infant? This would explain the family name, and also the fact that no-one remembered him.

Gravestones at Newton-le-Willows:

James Alexander Clarke - d. Dec 19th 1939 aged 74 yrs
beloved husband of
Margaret Clarke - d. Dec 21st 1942 aged 77
and their son
Walter Clarke d. July 12th 1957 aged 62

My nan confirms this and I can find these on the 1901 and 1891 census

My grandad James Alexander Clarke, son of Walter, is buried in a seperate grave in the same cemetery and died around 1986

Grave Deed:

James Alexander Clarke  d. 19th Dec 1939
Margaret Clarke d. 21st Dec 1942
James Alexander Clarke d. 5th Dec 1947
Walter Clarke d. 17th July 1957

HI

Looking at the GRO indes for deaths in 1947 there is only 1 James A Clarke listed

Dec Qtr 1947 Shrewsbury, 9a, 177 age given as 33 therefore birth c1914

FreeeBMD has a possible bith Mar Qtr 1915 West Derby 8b 1086 mother's maiden name given as Clarke

Happy Hunting

Hi, thanks for the info, I should (have prevously) mentioned that the name may also be spelled without an e

Clark is originally listed on census' but on the gravestones, for some reason were spelled with an e. We think maybe my G Grandad added the e, as he is the one who buried his mother and father there would have maybe added the e on their names too for the gravestone.

This may open up new names without the e?  :-[

The burial register (as opposed to the plot register, which holds the deeds information) for the cemetery may have more details (age, occupation, possibly address, etc.) so if you can contact whoever is currently responsible for the cemetery they may be able to be more precise.
McDonough, Oliver, McLoughlin, O'Brien, Cuthbert, Keegan, Quirk(e), O'Malley, McGuirk (Ireland)
Dudley, Winchurch, Wolverson, Brookes (Black Country)
Concannon, Moore, Markowski (Markesky), Mottram, Lawton (Black Country)
