Mystery Surname
« on: Sunday 14 June 09 23:18 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help dicipher the surname of the person on the second line of this census image please? I have left the lines before and after for comparison. The answer to this will help solve a 100 year old family puzzle.

Many thanks

Amy

Hi

What year is it?

As she is shown as married and the daughter of the head of household - have you looked for a marriage for a Margaret Blackwell

That's the mystery. This is 1911. She married 3 times and took a fourth surname without marrying. Hence the need for some unbiased eyes...

It looks as if they started to write Blackwell, you can see a faint Bl, on top of that looks like Perren, not too sure of first letter but the rest seems fairly clear

I don't know if it means anything Amy, but there's a marriage of a Margaret A Blackwell in 1919 O/N/D in Newport M, Glamorgan.

She's actually marrying someone called Charles Perrin.  Probably a coincidence.

Could she have decided to marry the man whose name she took before 1911?

I agree with Barbara about the beginning looking like 'Bl'.  And it does look like Perren or Perrin.

Also, it gives another surname for the spouse of Charles Perrin.

Could one of her previous names have been Webber?

I'll go with Perren or Perrin, and I think Barbara's right, the person completing the census started to write Blackwell, and then overwrote it.
