Mary Read Born Barham/Buckworth 1884
« on: Monday 15 June 09 00:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Could any one help me to find a maiden name and date of birth for Mary Read, she married for a 2nd time in 1887 to Richard Joseph Cumberland. She is listed on 1881 census married to William Read from Alconbury Weston. I don't know when or why the marriage failed. I can't find a record of the first marriage.

Thanks,

Curttom.

Are you certain Mary married twice???

I can find her single in 1871 -and a servant and I don't think the mary from 1881 is the same mary who married Richard Joseph cumberland

Do you have the marriage cert to richard joseph Cumberland??

I will post shortly with more information

here's the reason I think you have the wrong mary read

(i am guessing a little as you gave no d.o.b.)

Is this the mary read you had in 1881??

Barham lane buckworth Hunts
William Read head m 27 ag lab Alconbury weston hunts
MARY A wife 27 Barham Hunts
Frederick son 4 Buckworth hunts
Ellen daughter 1 Buckworth
RG11 1602 5 4

if this is the mary - then she is still with husband William in 1891
Denford northampton
William Read head m 37 ag lab Alconbury Weston
Mary A wife 37 barham
frederick son 14 Buckworth
Ellen daughter 11 uckworth
Walter son 5 Denford northampton
George C son 2 Denford northampton
Rg12 1221 11 15

1891 there is this mary cumberland
77John St
Peterborough northampton
Richard cumberland head m 33 beer 7 Lodging house keeper Spaldwick Hunts Blind in one eye
Mary wife 37 Buckworth
Emily R daughter 2 St Ives hunts
plus 9 Lodgers
RG12 1227 68 22

so possibly this is mary read (who married Richard cumberland)
 1881
Great addington Northampton
in household of James R wilkinson
Mary read servant U 27 general servant buckworth Hunts
RG11 1580 57

also note the mary read with husband William was mary A

what do you think??

Thanks for your help Suz,

The only info I have is from a living Aunt, I haven't got a birth certificate yet but I think that will be my next move. I know the Cumberlands in Peterborough at the guest house is the right family, the Emily listed is my Grandmother's sister. The reason I am looking for a previous marriage for Mary is that my Aunt said she had been married before. I will check with her that this is definately correct. She may even have my Grandmothers birth certificate which would be a great help, so I will get in touch with her.

Thanks again for your time and help, I think that William and Mary Ann are the wrong family.

Just to update you Suz, it appears my Aunt was leading me up the proverbial garden path,
I think you were right and it was her first marriage.

Sorry for wasting your time and thanks for the info.

Curttom.

I was going to conclude this thread but I am not sure how to?

Well then thank you very much, I would like you to look for me please. I have traced Richard Cumberland's parents (Thomas and Mary) and grandparents (Joseph and Hannah) and that is as far as I have got. So if you could look for Mary Read born 1854 married 1887 died 1945/6, I would be grateful.

Thanks Currtom.

Mary Ann Cumberland nee Read was my Great Grandmother.
She was married to Richard Joseph Cumberland born in Spaldwick.
They had four children Emily, Mary, Richard Thomas Jacob (my grandfather) and Bertha.
Somewhere I have Cumberland ancestry back to 1608.
