1841 &1851 censuses - Missing Gibsons COMPLETED WITH THANKS
« on: Monday 15 June 09 12:22 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help find a couple of missing Gibson children on the 1841 and 1851 censuses please.

1841  The Gibson family are in Barnsley:

William 25 weaver
Sarah 20
Mary Ann 4
Richard 18 months

missing is Margaret Gibson born c. 1838. Has she just been missed or is she living elsewhere? Could possibly be in Kendal which is where Wm & Sarah married but more likely in W Yks. She's not dead because she shows up on the 1851 -

1851

They are living in George Street, Barnsley.

William 39 weaver born Beverley, E Yks
Sarah 32   bobbin winder born Kendal, Westmoreland
Margaret 12 bobbin winder born Barnsley
Richard 10
Robert 7
George 2
John 3 months  - all born Barnsley

but this time - no Mary Ann. She was their first child, born in Kendal so, at 14 could be out in service. Or did she die?

So, 1841 Margaret aged about 3 is missing, and
1851 Mary Ann aged about 14 is missing.

At the risk of sounding like a game of Where's Wally - can anyone find them please?  ;D

Jill

There is a 3 yr old Margaret in Barsley living with other Gibsons

HO107 1325 2
Copper Str BArnsley
John 20 weaver
Sarah 20 weaver
Ann 4
John? 25 weaver
Isabella 25
John 7
Margaret 3

as relationships arent given it is impossible to say if she is a daughter or a visiting neice/cousin etc

I'll have a quick look to see if there is a John and Isabella with a 13 yr old MArgaret in 1851 -that would rule this one out.

modified to add - sorry nothing conclusive in 1851
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

census information is Crown Copyright from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Thanks - that looks interesting, lizdb. I've had another look at my copy of the 1841 census and it looks as though my Gibsons were off Sheffield Street in Barnsley, so will try and do a bit of fishing to see how close Copper Street was.

If the family you've found is related, then John (20) should be a brother of my William (25). I know my William was born Beverley - is there a 30 year old John Gibson born Beverley on the 1851?

Added: have found a baptism on IGI for a Margaret Gibson 1838 in Barnsley d/o Thomas & Isabella, so think this one probably isn't mine - worst luck!
