No idea about the first one, but the second (and third) are both "Steel works".

Oops!  I see, you want the first word of the second entry.  I think the first part is "Milling..." which would likely be someone who works parts on a metal lathe.

Hi,

I agree with nickgc the second word does appear to star "milling" the is it "ider" could it be "millwright",although it really does't look like that?

a useful site
http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks3a.html#Occupations

A quick question is this docment a census or a register of employees?

There are references to  "Judd"  owning steel works. The first word over "iron works" could be "Judd"

Agree with Robyn... "udd" definite and probably JUDD... but what's the circle[?] about the J?
Does it belong to the line above that which you've scanned or is it part of the line in question?'

It looks like Ash Wheeler (Ironworks) with Pudd written above. The word Pudd[ler] has been added later a clerk who went through the census and categorised all the different occupations. Puddling was a process in iron-making.

Millwinder (Steel worker)

This illustration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Iron-Making.jpg shows iron being 'milled,' and a puddling furnace along with other types of furnace commonly found in 19th century ironworks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puddling_furnace is all about puddling!

Thank you all for your guesswork! yes it is a census, 1901, and its in Bilston Staffordshire, the majority of my fam were in the "metals" industry, as well as stone and coal mining...

The first I know it is ash wheeler, as its my great grandad and his occupation is listed on his daughters mrriage cert  as Ash Wheeler, Ironworks... it was the bit above ironworks I couldnt fathom out Pudd, could fit... as there are, were, a few puddlers in the fam too

hmm Millminder? I can see that in it! but, this is probably a silly question... a Mill... minder? at a steel works? a steel... "mill" ? what would that mean? like a supervisor of a furnace or something?

And ty Koromo for the links as to what the trades actually do, I'll have a look there in a sec as to me they are just words, names lol

Thank you all so much !
