NSW Electoral Roll - General question
« on: Sunday 21 June 09 07:23 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know when it was compulsory for people to be registered on the NSW Electoral rolls?

I'm hoping to find some family between 1850 - 1885 but don't know if you had to be a home/property owner or what the criteria was at the time.

Thanks

Di

Thanks MM

It was a very informative website but unfortunately doesn't mention when compulsory voting came in - only the "right to vote" for home owners and rent payers over a certain amount.

Looks like I'll just have to go through each and every roll by area/division and see what I can find.

Thanks for your help

I'm pretty sure that  compulsory voting wasn't introduced till the mid 1920's.  Differing dates for each of the State elections.

Compulsory voting in Australian national elections
Compulsory voting has been part of Australia’s national elections since 1924.

Thanks Cando and Sylvia

So if I can find someone on an early electoral roll then I know that he's there by choice. Still means a long search but at least there's always hope.

Thanks for your help and links - BTW Cando, your link is a bit suspect I think.
