Thanks Jenn,

I think I found the answer I needed.

The following bit from the Archives probably explains why the first sighting of my guy was in 1893...

"In 1893 the property vote was abolished as well as the six month residence requirement, which in effect gave the vote to itinerant workers and shearers ....... "

I was hoping to find that it was compulsory to be on the Roll prior to this time but that wasn't the case.

At least this now means that I don't need to search all the previous years.

Sorry Cando - it works for me now as well. 

I kept getting a "Post reply" to a Rootschat message form with errors all over it. Looks like it's corrected itself.

Sounds like the gremlins have been active   I always check the links before posting so just a bit puzzled as to why it didn't work.
