Hi

I think it's No 9 Smithfield, Coal Pit,  Clackmannan

The S is only partly visible.  Different S than the one above though.

No - I've been looking too  :(

Could it be that he was above ground and in the vicinity rather than it being a Mining accident per se  :-\

There might be newspaper reports. My grt grandfather was killed by being crushed by a tub at the pit bottom in 1904 and there were two newspaper  reports on his death.

I've just found a Southfield Mine under Clackmannan:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~miningvillages/ListMines1873-1.html

and under Stirlingshire in 1893:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~miningvillages/ListMines1893.html

And now I look at it, it is Southfield  :)

Thanks for tthe links  Gadget :D
like you I think he was above ground. Im wondering why he had no place to live as all his family lived in clackmanan his wife died 1889 so it just him

would he have been classed as homeless even if living in poorhouse?
