Pre-1837 brick wall.....help please?
« on: Tuesday 23 June 09 13:35 BST (UK) »
I have traced my paternal Gauntlett line back but hit a wall. They are all living in Portsmouth, Hampshire so far which has made life easier, along with a surname that isn't too common.

I have a wedding certificate for John Gauntlett and Jane Callard on 9th August 1837. The age collumn says "Full Age" but from the census returns I can see that he was born around 1815/16.

Obviously there are no birth records and the wedding certificate says his father was anothe John Gauntlett, with an occupation of Victualler.

How do I find records about this John? I don't know when he was born, can't seem to find him on Census records and there are, I think, three possible death certificates (Mar 1851, Dec 1854 and Dec 1865) so I'm not sure which one to order or whether they will actually give me any details of date of birth etc      ???

Hi Billy,
Thanks, that could well be them...I see the entry and had looked here some years ago. There isn't much other info on the webpage, is there more detail in the actual Christening records somewhere? I'd like to link the occupation I have from the Marriage Certificate to confirm it really is them.

Do you know how comprehensive that site is? If there are only two John Gauntlett's in England (one in Wiltshire) Christened that year, how confident can I be (or is it more speculation before 1837)??

you always have to take what you get on the IGI with a pinch of salt, though I think it is a good chance he is your man.
If you type in the parents name you should get a list of 12 entries(8 children)
Kind regards,Billy.
ps he married Jane Callard at saint Mary,s Portsea so I recon this is him.
pps, It was normal for the child to be christened within 4 weeks of birth so you can work out the d.o.b around 4 weeks before christening.

Thanks Billy, most helpful. I will pursue the Gauntlett line through the IGI and see where it takes me.

I'm hoping to link up with a branch that filters down to the famous composer of Once in Royal David's City (Henry John Gauntlett) but not luck so far!

Henry John was born in 1805 so I suspect I have to go back further and then across! Also, he's born in Shropshire so probably this is a long shot!

Many thanks for your help though. Gauntlett is not a common name so it's quite a fun challenge to link all them together - a kind of one-name study if you will!
