James SARNEY - Transported to Australia.
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 14:33 BST (UK) »
I discovered that my ggguncle James Sarney was transported to Australia for life for stealing sheep. He sailed in June 1836 on Henry Porcher and arrived in Hobart, Tasmania on 15.11.1836.

He was born in 1808 in Bray, Berkshire, eldest son of William and Mary Sarney.

He worked as convict labour for Mr. Henry Phillips in Sydney.

In September 1846 he was given a Conditional Pardon (could never return to UK)for good behaviour.

I would like to know whether he married in Australia and whether he had any children.

http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11

SARNEY James
Date of departure 14 Jul 1836 on the Henry Porcher from London
Date of Arrival 15 Nov 1836

To view his digitised record go to Page 209 and centre of page
http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON31-1-40,262

Interesting to see the original records.

I have searched Tasmania, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia -  no death registrations for the surname SARNEY.  NSW has two deaths - an Emma in 1904 and John Christopher in 1973. No births either  in NSW - you can search here
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm

There are a few deaths in the New Zealand indexes
http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/home/

Perhaps he did go 'home' :-\

No SARNEY listings on the Australian electoral rolls 1900-1936.  The online whitepages only shows 9 listings for the whole of Australia.

Of course there is a possibility that his name has been mistranscribed.

Cheers
Cando

Have you tried contacting Eve (*)
Eve has provided much detail about the SARNEY name and could probably help.

Many thanks for your replies.  James Sarney's convict no. was 62249 and he was convicted Berks.

I have a copy from archives P.209.

As you say he may have come home although he doesn't appear in the 1851 and 1861 Census but I would think he would change his name.

Best wishes
Miriam.
