I found john in the 1851 census and the 1871 census would you like that information or do you already have it.

Hi peraldawn and welcome to rootschat ;D

When it says he was a "city missionary" I'd think he worked as a minister in that city preaching and teaching especially amongst the poor.

If you contacted the church you may be able to get a pic of the stone- and they may be able to advise you where  for instance their parish papers are archived. I'd reckon that there'd have been summat about him  in local news after his death.  This is surmose but it would be worth asking.

thanks mandy,
was wondering if anyone is able to photograph the stone 0997 john gow elgin cathedral, that would be such a bonus for my family tree booklet.
the same stone number has jessie gow and  mary scott gow walker there as well. thanks :)

Hi, I'd write to the Vicar of the parish church...

but I am a bit confused as you have called it the cathedral...
so we need to establish what the full name of the church is... maybe googling for that twon will do it? Is it called St John's or St Mark's or what?  And am I correct in thinking it is the Church of Scotland? or the Presbyterians or what?
If I know what denomination the church is then I can help with how to address the letter etc.   See what you can establish and let us know ;D

Hello

As you may be aware - if info not 'pm'd to you.

For any bmds in the area - always have a look at:

http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp

It's free and give some limited info on your John.  Just put his name in the search for people.  The site indicates that he had 4 children and parents were William Gow and Margaret Bain.

The ppv website at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk may be able to give copies of the OPR births (if recorded) - would cost (min spend) £6.00 - which allows for the download of 5 entries - if first time hits.  His death entry will - or should give parents names.

Regards,   Steve
