They appear on 1851 Census together but by 1861 Mary is not there. She must have died after the birth of their last child Jean in 1852 and before 1861 Census.

It looks to me although I cant make out exact names that Mathew KERR is deceased and his Mother has remarried and is known as Elizabeth or Ellen ??

I have just found a Family Tree for the Byers

They seem to be descended from William byers born 1848.
They have the wrong census entry though for 1851. that is the only one they have.
On it Thomas's parents are;

James BYERS and Janet SCOTT, but as census is wrong this may be too

I can contact them and get them to hopefully post on here if you want.

The notes in the right margin - correspond to the corrections made and marked (1), (2) and (3)

But can't make out what the writing is under each margin note.... The registrar's initials, signifying it is he who has made the corrections. Oh well;  thought it might have been something more 'telling'
