Thank's Guy's,

So I wonder where they did get married, if at all.  It looks like a certificate is the only way to find out.
Just been reading that a death certificate also gives this information to.

Swinno.

Do you  know if they  had any further children?

Perhaps one of our fellow rootchatters or Crasy Robert   would be able  to see if  they was a corresponding birth in NSW  to match  the death in 1914 of Marie R Swinnerton, just to see what surname  the child was registered in.

When Fred joined up I  noted his occupation was a defence Clerk  so  that might be also why he was in Victoria?

Could I just go back a step with these two?  Can I ask how you know they arrived in 1912?  Did they come together?  You probably have the census information but I'm trying to think of any clues at all as to the marriage (which I have to agree that perhaps didn'y happen).  I only have access to the indexes for 1911.

Is this him in the 1911 census (UK)
SWINNERTON Fred M 1881 30 West Derby Lancashire

It's the only Fred Swinnerton shown.  And might this be Rose Mary in 1911?  (I see her in 1901 also in Streatham with her parents.)

BOWLEY Rose Mary F 1893 18 Wandsworth London

Just been to the local library this morning, and kept this thread in mind.

I could only check births up to 1918, and only found the one, which relates to the death of Marie R SWINNERTON, previously mentioned.

There are 2 entries for the birth, both with the same reference.

1) Surname: SWINNERTON-PILKINGTON, Marie R  Parents: Fred and Rose M. Ref: 30724/1914 Granville

2) Surname: PILKINGTON, Marie R.  Parents: Fred S. and Rose M. Ref:30724/1914 Granville

It gives me the impression they were not married at this stage.

(Amendment - My mistake, I thought Rose's maiden name was PILKINGTON, but its BOWLEY, isn't it. In any case, I still didn't find their marriage on microfiche or Internet)

Hi all,

For what it's worth - ( maybe nothing  ;D)

I notice that Frederick's name on his enlistment
seems to be
Frederick PILKINGTON - SWINNERTON
and wife is named as
Rose Mary PILKINGTON - SWINNERTON

Might give some other options for searching

Here's Rose's death notices

SWINNERTON Rose Mary
August 21 at hospital, loved mother-in-law of John, Kath (dec), Max and Shirley, loving grandmother and great-grandmother of their children.

SWINNERTON Rose Mary - August 21 1980, loved mother of Eunice, Eric, Eileen and Edwyn.

The funeral took place at the Northern Suburbs crematorium 25 August.  Simplicity Funerals, Keith Russell.

Curiouser and curiouser - I don't think I have ever seen the names of the children in a Death Notice below the one that mentions the in-laws.  Maybe just an aberration.

On looking at the NSW BMDs I see marriages for the children around 1945.

WW2 records on the National Archives site:
Eric Hilary SWINNERTON born 1920, North Sydney. NOK is Fred
Edwyn Charles SWINNERTON b 1928 Granville, NOK Shirley
Fred himself appears to have a 1939-45 entry but not digitised.  There is another Swinnerton entry of a person b 1950 but I won't put the name as probably still living.

I expect Swinno has all this anyway.

Raylen, on looking at the WW1 details it seems to me that SWINNERTON is the surname used by the military and Pilkington seems to be used as a second forename.  There is an item on the UK Archives site stating that Sir Lionel Milborne Swinnerton Baronet and his Issue were granted the right to assume and bear the Surname of Pilkington jointly with the Surnames of Milborne and Swinnerton, and to be called by the Surnames of Milborne Swinnerton Pilkington. 1856.  The names are not in the right sequence for Fred's family but..... ??? ???

Cheers, Judith

Thank you Everyone for the replies to my posting.

Fred Pilikington Swinnerton was born Fred Percival Swinnerton  Oct 1882 in Coleshill Warickshire
England.  Perhaps he preferred the posher title of Pilkington to Percival.  Anyway he left London with
Rose Mary Bowley in 1911 for Sydney. Where they started a new life.

I could not find Fred in the 1911 census but in the 1901 census he was in Birmingham working as a Drapers Clerk age 19.  The 1911 census Fred in Liverpool is not this Fred.
I hope that this posting has answered all the questions that were asked if not please send post again.

Jenn wrote the following can you please explain?
When Fred joined up I  noted his occupation was a defense Clerk  so  that might be also why he was in Victoria.

Thanks
Swinno.
