Anne Foulkes mpn
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 22:47 BST (UK) »
Hi,

This abbreviation appears after the mothers surname on a baptism record for Jane Williams.

If mpn is married previous nmae and mmn is mothers maiden name  -does mpn imply the name is not necessarily a maiden name and could be a name from a previous marriage?

Hello,
Ive seen a few baptism records ::) and Ive never seen that :-\
It has to be worth looking for a previous marriage.

Post some details and I'll help if I can.

Paul.

Hi :)
I was given a printout of some of the Wern baptisms a while ago and have just taken a look at them for you.
Nearly all the baptisms have (mpn: surname) which must suggest it means maiden name, as I doubt all of the mothers mentioned would have been married more than once ;D  ??? :)

Hope this helps,
maidmarion

The original entry reads ;
Entry No 467.
Jane the daughter of John Williams Labourer  Bersham and Ann his wife formerly Foulkes by Rev W Williams.

Born 25 Nov 1827 bapt 6 Jan 1828.

They also seem to have  sons William b 15 July 1831, and Moses born 10 June 1833.
Address varies from Bersham for Jane,  Pant Y Garw for William and Esclusham Above for Moses.

 Hope this helps. :)

Hi,

Maidmarion - Well spotted that all the others were also mpn. Its particular to those entries as other records do make a distinction.
Wilcoxon-thanks. (You helped me before with the location of what turned out to be Pant y garn on Plas Drain rd.)

Its a bit of a leap but is there a general rule about wives moving to the chapel of their husbands? There are a few other Foulkes baptised at Wern and I wondered if their parents might be siblings of Anne? I know this is a wild assumption but...

AND- if Wern chapel was erected in 1807 where might the likely chapel/church predecessor be for Bersham residents? I was looking for potential bapts of either John Williams or Anne Foulkes both c 1805.

AND- might this tip into a time before non-conformists were as prominent? Should I be looking at either Ruabon or Wrexham PR's?

Sorry, lots to go at there..

Have you found the marriage of John and Ann.
I  believe that before 1837 a marriage had take place in  a Church to be considered  legal , in the eyes of the  law.
Problem  is, I `m sure there were many couples that went through some sort of a ceremony in a Chapel who didn`t care a monkeys.

Minera, Ruabon and Wrexham ( which covered Minera at that time ) would be worth a look.

Hi
Lots of my ancestors were non conformist from the  Minera/Bersham area, some using Wern and later the chapels in the Wesleyan circuit for that area.

Sorry but I am unsure if wives would move to the chapel of their husbands, I think most of mine either attended the same chapel or met at chapel  :)

There were some non conformist chapels in Wrexham prior to 1800 and some records appear to have survived :)

Hi Wilcoxon- I did check the Ruabon PR's when I managed to visit Wrexham last year and couldnt find anything so maybe Wrexham is a better bet

Maidmarion- Yes, I imagine there is a bit of a birds flocking together thing that means people meet at chapel and therefore marry within. Inevitably no hard and fast rules tho. I'll have to see what I can find in the Wrexham non conformists too

Thanks
