Fortunately Elford is not that common a name. I have found only one baptism for a Hannah and a total of three baptisms for parents of the same names as shown in Hannah's baptism, all in St Mary Bourne, which is not too far from Shipton Bellinger:

Hannah 26 Oct 1769
Elizabeth 17 Oct 1773
Ruth 16 Mar 1777

The parents' names are Deferick and Elizabeth Elford.  I have to admit that's a new name I'd not come across before.

I found the following in register transcriptions:
Thomas SPENCER m. 6 Nov 1802 Hannah ELFORD & had;
Joseph SPENCER bapt. 19 Apr 1803 17 Apr 1803
John SPENCER bapt. 5 Aug 1804 buried 15 Aug 1805 (infant)
Mary Anne SPENCER bapt. 19 Jul 1808 1807
Elizabeth SPENCER bapt. 2 Jun 1811
William SPENCER bapt. 13 Oct 1809
Thomas SPENCER bapt. 25 Apr 1812 ?? found transcribed as James 25 Apr 1813 ? buried 21 May 1837 aged 25 (recorded as Thomas)
Thomas Sarah SPENCER bapt. 18 Dec 1814
Martha SPENCER bapt. 26 May 1815 16 May 1816
Robert SPENCER bapt. 13 Sep 1819 13 Sep 1818
John SPENCER bapt. 29 Dec 1822 buried 23 Mar 1823 (infant)

Hannah ? buried 13 Apr 1828 aged 54

I think a check of the originals would not go amiss if you are able.

Was Thomas still alive in 1841?

Nell

I have a Lucy ELFORD on my Family Tree who married John Alexander in 6 Oct 1796 in ST MARY BOURNE, Hampshire. I couldn't find a birth certificate for Lucy Elford; perhaps her parents are Elizabeth and Deferick Elford of St Mary Bourne?

Lucy Elford was born circa. 1776.

It would certainly seem probable that Lucy was sister to Hannah, Elizabeth & Ruth. I have looked again and can't see anything to help.

I was researching this line for someone that I no longer have contact with.

One of the sisters, Ruth Elford, might be Lucy because I couldn't find a marriage certificate or a death certificate with a RUTH ELFORD, just a birth certificate. Maybe Ruth had her name changed, or someone wrote down the wrong name?

A census record from 1841 (Hampshire) with Lucy Elford/Alexander mentions her being born around 1777 just like Ruth!

One of the Elford sisters, Elizabeth Elford, married Edmund HAILSTONE during 1791 in St Mary Bourne, where Lucy was married (and perhaps born).

Nice detective work. I agree with you, that Ruth and Lucy are logically one in the same. I can imagine the name Lucy, written in such a way that someone has transcribed it as Ruth.
