Robert Henry McHugh Ontario please
« on: Monday 29 June 09 14:18 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am hoping that someone could help us find Robert Henry McHugh, born 1854 in Thedford Ontario.  I believe Thedford was part of Lambton County at that time.
We know he left there & lived most of his life in Texas USA.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know if this is the family you are looking for

In the 1861 census Toronto Township Peel County
John McHugh, 49 b. Ireland Farmer
Mary McHugh, 40 b. Ireland, wife
Mary Jane(14), Thomas John (12), Wm James (9), Robert Henry (3) all born Canada West
Wm. McHugh, 54, b. Ireland Farmer
died in that year Mary McHugh, 95, of old age

Does the 1861 census give any other info such as address or anything?

They are in Enumeration district #7 of Toronto Township but no other land description.  I'm not sure where to find a map that might show enumeration districts.  Here is a link to a map of the area in 1880s.
http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/CountyAtlas/peel.htm

The other details from the census are they live in a 1 storey frame house.  5 males and 2 females are living together all belonging to one family.  They also have an unrelated female living with them - Elenor Derby 17, born Ireland.  2 males and 1 female were in school that year.

In 1871 the family is in Toronto Township Div #3 Peel County District #39
John McHugh (60) b. Ireland, Methodist, farmer, married
Sarah McHugh (44) b. Ireland, C England, married
Thomas McHugh (21) b. Ont. W. Methodist, farmer
Wm James McHugh(19), b. Ont, W. Methodist
Robt Henry McHugh(10) b. Ont, W. Methodist - in school
Charles Wesley McHugh (8) b. Ont, W. Methodist - in school
William McHugh (64) b. Ireland, C England, Farmer

Charles is 8 - I don't know why I can't get rid of the happy face.

1881 census District #150 County Halton Township Trafalgar Div #2
John McHugh (69) b. Ireland, Methodist, Farmer, Married
Sarah McHugh (57) b. Ireland, C England
Wm James McHugh (26), b. Ont, Methodst, Farmer
Chas. W. McHugh (19) Ont, Methodist
Edward Robinson (16), b. England, Farm Labourer

Has Robert Henry disappeared from Ontario by that time?

There seems to be a new wife in the 1871, as Sarah  is new name, new age, new religion?  ;D  J.J.

Looked for a death for Mary, but there are so many with the name I can't seem to find it? (This Mary's surname was Duncan)

What's this? He is supposed to be in Texas with his mother Mary in 1880?
http://home.att.net/~roywfgs/Wilkins/n142.htm
Hmmm. This Robert Henry had father forename Henry? Are we looking for the right family here, or is this site all topsy turvy? http://home.att.net/~roywfgs/Wilkins/f3895.htm

the 1880 has:
Mary MC HUGH  age 51 says born England / At Eating House
This R. H. MC HUGH age 15 born Canada has a sister Agnes age 13

So which Robert Henry do we seek as the above is purported to be born Thedford Ontario in 1864...
further reading shows he also had 3 other sisters...and they all emigrated to Texas circa 1868...so the last census they may show on would be the 1861 with the parents & three elder sisters only...and the sisters may not have been born in Ont.

There is another R. H. MCHUGH age 20, born Canada, a Cabinet Mkr.  living with the Moody family in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio...and that could also be the one missing from the 1881 found above...Sorry to put a wrench into the works...
