where to put old documents?
« on: Monday 29 June 09 16:08 BST (UK) »
I feel very lucky to have many original old documents from the last century relating to my family - the latest came to light yesterday, 2 letters, one from grandmother to her husband and the other a reply - written in 1945!

Where do I store all these - in a box in the spare room!  What if there is a burglary or a fire?  Should I pay (if i could afford it) to store them somewhere safer?

This really does keep me awake at night!

Where do you store yours?

Hi Sara

You could try leaving them in a Safety Deposit Box at a Bank. I dont think they charge a lot ???.

Hi,

You can buy metal box files; they are not expensive. A local branch of T****'s have them on offer at the moment.  I think most office suppliers would sell them

I'm off to buy one tomorrow.  :)

I'm not sure if a metal box would protect them from fire ...

... but you have, of course, got them safely scanned or photographed, haven't you ?!

no not yet - one of those jobs i keep meaning to get round to....  how bad that is!

I think in a metal box they would melt in a fire and could still be stolen. :(

Going to start scanning this week!

One bank that I know of charges about £18 a year for a large envelope to put papers in, whether it is more for a safety deposit box I wouldn't like to say. They don't charge for getting the papers out to look at them, although having said that, there would be no need to do so when you have your copies.

T****'s do sell fireproof storage boxes, but I don't know what their rating is.  Probably also obtainable at large stationery suppliers.

Only problem with them fire proof boxes, is that if your house was burgled, that would be one of the things they would take. Plus I think the fire rating is only half an hour, and it might not be water proof, which is something you also have to think of if you do have a fire
