Help with place name on census
« on: Tuesday 30 June 09 15:28 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone, hope it's not too hot!

I can't work out what is the place name alongside Joanna aged 14 and her brother.  In a later census she puts Breconshire down, but this says something Pembrokeshire.

Ancestry transcribed it as Jamaica!

I would say Swansea, not sure if it's in Pembrokeshire, but it's halfway between Pembroke and the Brecons!  Looks like she was hedging her bets!!

Hi All

There's a useful guide to registration districts and towns at

www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg

According to this Swansea was in Glamorgan (1837-1974) then West Glamorgan

I'm from that area - Swansea is in Glamorgan and I'm afraid always has been, that's why I'm confused.   As mentioned we can trace Joanna (different spellings too) back to Brecon, she returned there for a while too in later life.   So am pretty sure she was born in Brecon.

Sorry - the 'S' on son and their surname, transcribed as Sheers is different to the place name.

Hi Steven

Not sure it is Swansea.  If you look further down the original record Anne Holland is shown born in Swansea and it looks completely different!

I'll keep probing.  Isn't this fun?
