1855 Joanna Oshea Crickowell 11b 141

Steven

I've just been looking at Crickhowell. Outside chance - could it be Llangenny/Llangenau just to the East of Crickhowell.

Maybe wrongly pronouced/spelled as Lancanai or similar.

One mystery, (trying not to get too bogged down with Joanna) is we can't find any birth record for the brothers William and Edward.

Yes Gadget

That's a strong possibility, Pembrokeshire, I think has the lowest number of Welsh speakers in the Welsh counties (I'll stand corrected if wrong).  I think a lot of the enumerators were struggling with Welsh names.

u is pronounced i
i is pronounced ee

Hi mothball

Penbrokeshire is often referrred to as the little England beyond Wales  :)

u is pronounced i in South Wales, I believe, but a gutteral eeeeeeeeuuuuu in North Wales.

I'm  trying to imagine  Welsh placenames in an Irish accent  :-\

Gadget yes.

My ancestors were an Italian man who married an Irish woman, they then had 4 children all over Wales.   I cannot imagine how they sounded to the natives.

1871 census - Have you eliminated John Shea age 38? living in Commercial Row/Rd Pembroke Dock, Private Soldier 15 Foot, born Kenny, Ireland with wife Catherine and 4 yr old dau Hannah? RG9 4155

Poss scenario: wife, Catherine dies, John marries Mary, Mary just assumes Joanna was born in Pembroke and Joanna doesn't really know either and confusion reigns thereafter.  There is a marriage of John Shea in Bedwelty Dist (near Brecon Beacons) in Jun Q 1874 - one of the brides is Mary Ann Benson.  No birth certs found for two boys because they are her children, named Benson originally.  Just found Edward and William Benjamin born in Brecknock at the correct times.

What do you think, Mothball?

Oh heavens, he's gone off-line now!  Perhaps someone else will double check and find the flaws!

Presumably you really mean the 1861 census  ??? So are you saying that Joanna is Hannah in 1861 - maybe mistranscribed by the enumerator?

Yes I do mean 1861 - got a bit too excited there!

Yes Hannah and Joanna are the same person - at least that's my theory.  Needs checking eg, I haven't checked if John, Catherine and Hannah are on 1871. And couldn't see obvious death for Catherine and haven't checked other marriage combinations for 1874 marriage of John Shea

But must go and wash the pots  >:(

Hi all - sorry I was out and missed the message til now!

Gadget is too kind and I would have been inclined to think it was Swansea, to be honest!

I like Alpine's scenario.

Read this a bit quickly - what does Jo(h)anna have to say about her father on marriage certs?
