Age alterations on marriage certificate......Completed
« on: Wednesday 01 July 09 06:09 BST (UK) »
I have in front of me a marriage certificate from the GRO for 1924. I can read the handwriting  clearly, but am a little puzzled by the age of the bride.

It was filled in as 24, which is crossed out and above it is written 25. But underneath both numbers is written 14 years, and in the right hand margin of the certificate the word fourteen is written   and initialled, appprently by the Registrar.

Has anyone come across this before?  ???

If she was 24 or 25, I should be able to find her in the 1901 Census, but if she was 14, she would not have been on it.   :-\

I'm looking, Ricky.   :D

Her name was Edith Elizabeth Taylor, with father William Taylor, an Engineer's toolmaker.
She married in Wolverhampton.

If the "14" is repeated in the margin then it's the number assigned to the amendment.  In other words, the registrar amended the age from 24 years to 25 years, then marked it as amendment no14 (which would have been carried over to a numbered register of amendments).

Thanks Ricky and Anna!  :D  :D

Ricky, I just found that 1901 census record.  That sounds quite likely after what Anna has so kindly explained to me. Now I just have to follow that family and see if I can find any more likely clues that it is indeed the right family.

Anna, much appreciated. I'll store that in my memory bank!     :D

Thanks again, Ricky.

Very much an unknown area for me. I'm trying to help an 84 year old man who has just had his first grandaughter.......and decided he'd really like to have something about his ancestors to put aside for her.  :D  :D

Hi Dee/Ricky/Anna

I have a similar correction although 50+ years later on one of our children's certificate.

In 1911 they are still in Wolverhampton.  :)
