Grave stone photo - New Elgin South (Modified message)
« on: Thursday 02 July 09 20:50 BST (UK) »

I would really appreciate it if someone could look for and take a photo of a grave stone in New Elgin Cemetery.

The number I received from the Council Burial Department was N107/108 Libindx NE(S)616

The stone is for a William McKenzie husband of Williamina Blyth who died on 17th November 1986.  Other dates on the stone are 1994 and 2004.  It is right next to a stone with the year 1947

I am afraid I do not have a plan of the cemetery which might make it a mammoth task.

Maybe someone who is familiar with the numbering could find it.

Cheers
Betty

Betty,

I have no idea how the index system works; but I am happy to have a look!

That would be brilliant Stuart if you could find the stone.

When I first put the message on I did not realise there was an entry in Libindx.

I believe they would have a plan and numbering of the stones in the cemetery.

Thanks for your offer.

Cheers

Betty

I believe they would have a plan and numbering of the stones in the cemetery.

They do have plans. I strongly recommend looking at the plans before heading for the cemetery because there are literally hundreds of stones in each section of it. You can see the plans in the Local Heritage Centre at East End School, Institution Road.

Be aware that the number of the stone in LIBINDX, i.e. NE(S)616, relates only to the plan in the Local Heritage Centre, and not to the plans used by the burial ground office, so don't bother with those, they'll only cause confusion.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for the information.  I won't be able to visit the cemetery myself.  I don't know if Stuart, the person who offered to find the stone can visit Libindx.  I will leave it to him.  He might get lucky and find a groundsman who could point him in the direction of the council numbering.

Thanks

Betty

Betty,

I can visit the Heritage Centre, so, thanks to Forfarian, there's a good chance that I will find the headstone.

I'm also sad enough to just wander around the cemetery :o but please don't tell anyone ;)

Hi Stuart

It would certainly save you time if you can find the location of the grave stone from the Heritage Centre.

I too spend many an hour wandering round churchyards and cemeteries in my area.  Who needs a Trades Directory when you  read some of the old stones.

I look forward to hearing how you get on.

Thanks

Betty
