Hi Girls,

I sent an email to Hunter Valley group last night to find out where Charles PAYNE  is buried.

This is the following info:

NUM SURNAME GIVEN NAME AGE BURIAL DATE YEAR PLOT SECTION CEMETERY

9 PAYNE Charles 82 20-Jul 1921 9 CoE - A Stroud General
10 PAYNE Catherine 69 4-Aug 1920 10 CoE - A Stroud General

Quote
Is Catherine his wife, buried in the next plot.

I was not sure on this info until I found this marriage below. Then I found Catherine’s death and then looked for children

3861(REF) 1875 PAYNE Charles KAY Catherine Port Stephens

15380(REF) 1920 PAYNE Catherine Robert Ann N Stroud

18972(REF) 1876 PAYNE Blanche Charles Catherine Port Stephens
20840(REF) 1878 PAYNE Mary Charles Catherine Port Stephens
15628(REF) 1881 PAYNE John Charles Charles Catherine Port Stephens

So, The Charles PAYNE that died in Stroud is my one. His mother Hannah, father Samuel.

The one that is in Victoria is Lizzie Olive PAYNE's father. Lizzie is the one that married a Joseph Harvey BUCKBY and is related through my BUCKBY line.

Let me know what you think

Interesting things there newbie.

I've been wondering to myself at what stage did EDWARD decide that he needed a change, so I did a bit of trawl through Sands  directories and it is interesting.

Sands Sydney Commercial Dir.
1858-9Coleman , Edward. Carpenter and Undertaker, Denison St. Netown

Sands Syd. Alphabetical Dir.
1863
Coleman Mrs HANNAH. Umbrella Maker. 115 King Street
Sands Syd. Trades and Proffessions Dir.
1863 (same year as above)
Coleman, Mrs HANNAH, Undertaker, 115 King Street

Sands Syd. Alphabetical
1867
Coleman, Mrs Hannah Umbrella Maker 117 King Street

Sands Syd Alphabetical Dir.
1873
Coleman C. umbrella maker, 117 King Street

Looks like he may have gone quite early!
And looks like Charles may have stuck to Mum throughout.

All too easy to speculate I guess.

Sue
Now just adding why would Charles be calling himself COLEMAN?
Maybe not your Charles afterall, but CAROLINE?

Very interesting indeed.

Thanks for that info Sue.

From memory there is something about the Coleman family in the Stroud early settlers book. I do not have a copy of it but do have some info somwhere in a folder I think.

It looks like the family moved around a bit.

Edward and Hannah's daughter Caroline Coleman  died 1856 St George District,
At some stage they moved to Port Stephens, then onto Stroud.

Can I ask a favour Sue or anyone else,

Can you check the Sands Directories and see if there is a Charles PAYNE and a Catherine Payne living at the same address.

This would give me something to work on

Hi Newbie,
The directories usually give only one name at  an address if it is  a married couple, and it will be the husband's
Usually only single women were listed in their own name if they wished to be.

I can look for Charles, but where do you want them looked up and about what years?

There is a birth record for a Edward Coleman in the above link

I have asked them if they know how I would order it to see if it is my one

I don't have access to country directories before  1897.
So cannot check out of Sydney till then.

I did find this interesting family cluster on the 1870-1871 electoral roll in the Williams Division.
Coleman, Charles. Gloucester Rd. Residence. Karuah
Coleman, Edward. Stroud. freehold. Karuah
Coleman, Isaac, Gloucester Rd. Residence. Karuah
Coleman William. Johnson's Creek. leasehold. Johnson's Creek.

No sign of Charles Payne in that district.
