Scottish marriage - help with reading please
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 16:14 BST (UK) »

I haven't done much Scottish research over the past couple of years - it got too expensive, so I'm a bit out of practice. Could anyone help with the reading of James McTaggart's marriage certificate from 1902, Lanark.

Any help much appreciated.
Lesley

Thanks Gadget - I really am on another planet today - I was reading it as Rape Specimen - and wondered what sort of history I was about to uncover in my daughter-in-law's family!

Presumably the rope ??? was her job, and James was illegitimate?

Thanks Isabel - not nearly so exciting as my version, but a lot more likely! It was the 'subsequently married to . . .' bit that confused me!

I can see Spinner quiet clearly now.  I think the sun was shinning on my laptop!

Looking again, I  think it might be Bridges or Bridger rather than Bridge.

I agree. Although it's great for genealogists, I do wonder why the Scots felt it necessary to make it absolutely clear when a child was illegitimate. It must have been a bit of a downer to have the fact that your mother was a 'fallen woman' clearly written on your marriage certificate. My English ancestor at about the same time, just married using her stepfather's name. Still, it has made my research a bit easier to have James's lineage clearly set out.

Not sure why I misread the extract at first, but am very grateful to you all for your help.
Thanks again
