SAVAGE & HUMPHRIES families Wotton Under Edge
« on: Tuesday 07 July 09 08:58 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am researching the Savage family from Wotton Under Edge.

John Savage married Catherine Humphy (meant to be Humphries but says Humphy on IGI). 26 November 1796, Wotton Under Edge.

The couple had 4 children all born Wotton Under Edge -
Humphrey Savage - 14 May 1799
William Savage - 11 Sep 1803
Robert Savage - 13 Oct 1805
(these boys have the name Humphries or Humpheryes as middle names)
Jonas Roberts Savage 01 Jan 1809

Jonas changed his name by 1833 to Jonas Roberts Thomas -
He married Louisa Terrett - April 1833, London, Kennington. It look as as though all the brothers might have changed their names and left WUE too.
It seems like in 1851 census Humphrey has changed his name to Thomas too, living St Mary's, Newington as a Grocer.
There is no 1851 census records that I can find for a Humphrey, William and Robert Savage - or parents Catherine and John.

There is a John and Catherine Thomas from 1841 census still living in WUE at Perry's Hospital.

So, it seems like the whole family changed their name ... and I am trying to find out why.

To add to the saga - in 1841 census Louisa Terrett's (Jonas' wife) mother - Elizabeth Terrett has a grandaughter - Catherine Thomas (upholsterer) living with her in St George Southwark, Surrey.

Catherine's parents seem to be Thomas and Mary Ann Thomas. The IGI states she was born Aug 29. 1829.

A Mary Ann Territ married Thomas Humphrey's Thomas Dec 1826 - St Mark, Kennington, London.

Is Thomas another possible brother for Jonas? - what is the connection between the Terrett's living in London and the Savage/Thomas' from Wotton Under Edge?

It's very confusing ....

If anyone has any info on any of these families or is able to help in anyway or is able to offer any advice I would really appreciate it!

Rebecca :)

Rebecca,

Did you notice that the marriage of John and Catherine is a submitted entry in the IGI?  As you may be aware, submitted entries must always be verified by checks on church records etc.

The IGI data for the four sons were extracted from the Bishops transcripts and believe you me, the transcripts for 1799 to 1812 (I have no notes about the rest)  are very difficult to read so if you intend to hire and search LDS film 427812 be prepared for eyestrain and headaches :D

I need to hire and search the BT's again but as my local LDS church closes its FHC soon until Sept. I'll have to be patient :)   I'll likely post an offer for a look-up in the BT's when I've ordered the film, so watch this space!

Perhaps they ran away to get married and changed the name to remain hidden!

Regards

Chas

P.S.

As there are no earlier entries for Savages at W-U-E the family may have come from elsewhere.  Have a look for them in the IGI - to find possible locations - then check the locations at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle

Hi Chas,

I was thinking of going into my local lds church in the weekend ... so hopefully it goes ok and I can read what the transcript's say  ;)

Yeah, I did see the marriage for John and Catherine ...

I think that this might have been John Savage's baptism -

John Savage 20 May 1772, Wotton Under Edge. Mother: Sarah Savage.

There isn't a reference to a father - I also found it by doing a regular name  search on family search website - but it didn't come up on the Hugh Wallis site, because I also noticed that there weren't may Savage's living in the area before this family.

I also think that Catherine's father might have been Thomas Humphries - maybe they chose his first name as their last name??

I can't be certain that this is her though -

Catherine Humphries 1770 - Wotton Under Edge to Thomas and Hannah Humphries ...

Rebecca  :)

Rebecca,

I'd started to transcribe the W-U-E BT's at 1770.  I finished the Bap's & burials up to the end of 1772 then gave up because of more pressing problems but I can confirm that on May 20th 1772 John (B.C.) of Sarah Savage was christened, so the submitted entry is correct.  One day I might type the stuff into a word processor and make it available.

Thanks for that  :)

I'm pretty sure that he's the John Savage that I am looking for since there doesn't seem to be any other John Savage's born around the same time in W-U-E.

Do you know if it gave the name of his father?

I suppose I might have to find marriages for people with the last name Savage and then figure it out from there.

I definately know what you mean about the transcripts being hard to read - ???

Yasme,

Welcome to the best place there is.

Might I suggest that this should have been posted as a new subject because more people are likely to read it than will read it on the end of this chain.

Remember; who, what, where and when or at least two or three of them, is more likely to result in useful replies.

Regards
