Nel, our posts on the 1841 entry crossed over  :) I wondered whether that entry in Peterculter was mistrancribed for a Gordon given that there is no further reference to him in later censuses?

Ev, useless fact from me perhaps! Jane Bannerman's mother was Isabella Knowles and she looks to have been brought up by her aunt Catherine Knowles.

The 1841 family that Ev referred to in Easter Carnie, Skene is that of Garden and Elizabeth (Tait). Garden Snr. is away from the home for the entry (shows elsewhere probably visiting). George son and other children show. Garden has been transcribed as Gairn, aged 8.

Monica  :)

I saw the older Gardner by himself  -  somewhere  -  in 1841  :-\   I'll have another look......

Ev, maybe the 1857 marriage might be a safer bet given it's info he would  have given himself...you know what can happen with death cert informants  :)

Mary, that entry you found in 1841 Census for Garden Snr. looks to be the one. He shows with wife Elizabeth on the 1851 census.
