Christina DAVEY - Gwennap
« on: Wednesday 08 July 09 10:27 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am on the hunt for information about an ancestor of mine by the name of Christina (Christiana) Davey (married surname) who was born about 1776 in Gwennap, Cornwall, England, and died 1860 Cornwall, England. She was living with her son and family in the 1841 census (Henry and Mary Davey) and is a widow. Any help with her maiden name or her deceased husband would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Annabananae

Hi annabananae,

I see she is with daughter Mary (unmarried) in 1851 (not wife of Henry) born Illogan

Mary DAVEY was baptised 16 July 1809 Illogan Parents John and Christian

Henry DAVEY was baptised 23 Mar 1818 Illogan Parents John and Christian

There is

John DAVY = Christian TREGILGAS 22 May 1793 Gwennap

The only Christian TREGILGAS I can see was baptised in 1766 so appears to be about 10 years older than Christian DAVEY from the census, so seems too old to be Henry's mother   :'(

Found a marriage in Illogan 11 Apr 1796 John Davey to Christian ALLEAR, a baptism which may well be her -  Christiana ANNEAR in Gwenapp 16 Jun 1776 parents John & MARY

Thanks Everyone!

Would there be any information on her parents then? John and Mary Annear/Allear? Is there any information on their births/marriage/deaths? Is Annear/Allear a common name in Illogan, Cornwall?

Thanks, Anna Brisbane, Australia

Annear/Anear looks a popular name expecially the areas around Redruth

This looks like a possible marriage for John & Mary

Gwenapp 26 Jun 1775 John Annear and Mary May

On IGI there is only 1 John Annear baptism in Gwenapp and that was in 1765 so he would have only been 10 at the time of marriage; lots of John Annears in Probus (about 11 miles from Gwenapp) with parents of John & Susanna, Simon & Elisabeth, Samuel & Elisabeth, Richard & Anne. It's possible that John Annear might have come from Probus as it looks like they married in the bride's parish:-

Mary May baptised 8 Jul 1749 Gwenapp, parents William & Ann (looks like they married in Gwenapp -  William May & Ann Bawden 6 Jun 1747)

Christian/a siblings baptised in Gwenapp where it shows parents as John & Mary - first born son named Richard, presumably he died and another son was named Richard later on - tempting to use name association for John's father being called Richard!!

David 7 Mar 1784
Elizabeth 31 Jan 1790
John 19 Aug 1782
John 13 May 1792
Mary 23 May 1790
Mary 21 Apr 1794
Richard 22 Apr 1778
Richard 10 Aug 1788
Samuel 21 Feb 1781
William 20 Aug 1786

I did see some baptisms covering the same period for a John Anear/Annear and Mary Tengrouse in Probus, plus a John Annear & Mary with children baptised in Redruth from 1792.

Good luck, hope you get some promising leads

I see you may have had your question answered, but you may find the Gwennap OPC a great resource for finding references to BMD as well. Or the Cornwall OPC.  other resources also include the Cornwall Inscription Project.

I have been able to locate my varied Cornwall lot, and have found it to be pretty good. But in saying that matching the correct person can be tricky at times.

Good Luck
