I've had a look at the Wakefield Thomas alpinecottage suggests. At first I felt hopeful as I have a few millwrights in my tree - but this is clearly Loxley and not Lowsley, so is a different person. My (wrong?) theory was maybe Thomas's wife came from Sheffield, and that's why he had moved there. As he was a dock labourer I suppose he could have transferred to other labouring jobs, but I just couldn't guess what that word was.

I've never heard of a muddle maker (so Jen's first guess was near the mark), but I can just about read it now someone has told me what it says!

Again, thank you all - you stopped me adopting someone else's family as my own - and I learned something new on the way.
