Harpurs of Wexford & Grahamstown, South Africa.
« on: Friday 10 July 09 04:06 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone has any earlier Irish information on this branch of the Harpur family.

John Harpur from Wexford married Francis Malloy of Cork on 19.11.1848.
They had 3 children, William, Margaret and Laurence.
John died on 15.3.1875.

at some time one son, William emigrated to South Africa. he married Jane Corcoran of County Cork in Grahamstown.

William died in 1887.

they had a large family. Frances, Jane, Ethel Mary, Amy Margaret, William Francis, Gertrude Ellen, Ivy Charlotte, Edward Jerome.
the children married in South Africa and from family stories 3 of them had families.

If anyone has studied the earlier roots of this family in Ireland i would love to hear from them.

Hiya Anton!
Your subject title caught my eye because of the reference to Grahamstown...
Did your Harpurs come from Wexford town or County Wexford?! I just think it's likely that families who knew each other would go out to people they knew in foreign countries and my great grandfather had a cousin who was a priest in Grahamstown or Gramstown. My ancestor's name was James O'Gorman from Killegney, Clonroche and his cousin Fr James Fitzhenry.
Let me know if I can help but also might be worth checking out Harpurs in the 1901 census to see if extended family were still around then. www.nationalrachives.ie

All the best,
Caroline

O'Gormans - Ballybawn and Killegney, Co. Wexford

Caroline
thanks so much for your comments. I was surprised to see any reply as my original posting was July 09! Unfortunately the only info I have about the family, which was obtained by my cousin, now deceased, is in my posting.
Ethel Mary was my maternal grandmother who died in the early 1950s in South Africa. i am told that there are still Harpurs in Grahamstown but have not made contact with any of them as I was trying to get more information about Irish side of the family.
I am sure you are right and that they emigrated to Grahamstown because of some family or friend connection there. I will follow up on your suggestion.

There was a J Harpur living in Ram Street (former name for Skeffington Street) in 1936 - see attached extract from a 1936 Wexford People Newspaper.

Check out the following Public member family tree to see if the Fisher's Row Harpurs are connected to your family.    http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/1540723/person/-1923747179

If they're not connected try & provide some further info - ages etc.

A Henrietta Harpur married into my Finn family in Australia.

Not my direct line so I don't know where she came from.
My query is, is this a common spelling in Ireland?  I'd never heard it until I found her.

Denys (France); Rossier/Rousseau (Switzerland); Montgomery (Antrim, IRL & North Sydney NSW);  Finn (Co.Carlow, IRL & NSW); Wilson (Leicestershire & NSW); Blue (Sydney NSW); Fisher & Barrago & Harrington(all Tipperary, IRL)
