Marriage - Patrick Noonan and Margaret Connelly
« on: Friday 10 July 09 12:17 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping someone can help me with finding the details of the marriage between Patrick Noonan and Margaret Connelly.
The information I have is  - they married in December 1847 at Galway.
They later came to Australia - although I am unable to find a shipping record.
I would be grateful for any information.

do you know what religion the family were ?

Full civil registration started here in Ireland in 1864, so too late for Patrick Noonan and Margaret's marriage if they were RC.

Non-Catholic marriage registration commenced in 1845. You can search the index to these records on familysearch : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

Cert can be ordered using the index details from the GRO - www.groireland.ie

for marriages before Civil registration you will need to search parish records, so a parish or townland would be required.

Some transcripts for Co. Galway are available on the website of the Irish Family History Foundation (pay-site) at : www.irish-roots.ie

Thank you Audrey and Shane - You help is most appreciated.
I'm assuming they were Catholic as Margaret was buried in a Catholic Cemetery in Albury, Australia.
What information would be on a marriage registration and would there be any shipping records from your end?

If Margaret and Patrick were Catholic then  but they should be included in a Parish register.

The amount of information in these can vary from parish to parish, but would usually include at least the bride maiden name & both fathers names

Thanks for that Shane -
so with the information Audrey gave, re: marriage at Thurles, Tipp. -
how would I access the information in that Parish register?

RC parish records are available on microfilm in the National Library in Dublin... I assuming you are in Australia so that's not much use to you...

Some Tipperary parish record transcripts are included on the IFHF pay web site I mentioned earlier.

A great excuse to visit beautiful Ireland!
In reality however, I will have to pay a visit to the IFHP site instead.
Thank you, Shane and Audrey, for your help.

Audrey will have to confirm the source for the above record but since it says 'civil reg.' I suspect it might be a marriage that took place in a Registry Office (too early for Catholic marriages to be included in civil registration). Using link to the index of civil registrations given earlier you can search for bride and then groom separately and then see if there are any matches (registration district, volume and page number). Hint- I would start looking for 'Patrick Noonan', then narrow down results by selecting place (Tipperary) and date (1850-1859) to see if you can find the above marriage.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
