Nicholas Murphy - Wexford
« on: Friday 10 July 09 15:10 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am currently looking into doing a family tree but can't get any info on my Great-Grandad, just know he was born in Wexford married a lady called Jane (surname unknown), had 2 sons Matthew (born 1916) and Patrick.

Moved to Dublin at some point in the earl 1900's and he worked as a carter?

Need help :)

have you tried the Census on the National Archives website at : http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/  (free)

It's not complete yet, but  1911 data for Dublin and Wexford are included..

the Irish Civil Index is available on : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

Thanks Shane,

I can find them in Dublin up until 1939-40 Electoral list, but cant find anything before that, as you can imagine, looking for a Murphy in Wexford is like a needle in a hay stack!

I had a look at the results for all Nicholas Murphy on the 1911 census and there are just over 100 - and that includes some from counties other than Dublin or Wexford, not as many as I thought there might be.

I am sure quite a few could be eliminated by age, and others by county of birth.. hopefully with the occupation, and his wifes name it might be possible to find a possible match..

just as long as he didnt live somewhere in between, like Wicklow, during 1911!

I would focus on finding Matthew's birth cert as that will give his mother's maiden name. Using the link provided above by Shane, I was surprised to find so few Matthew Murphys born in Dublin or Wexford in the time around 1916.

One word of caution however, he may have been registered as 'Male Murphy' if his name wasn't decided at the time of registration.

Dara.

Thanks for the input lads.

Just wondering, i have in my possession Matthews marriage cert and death cert, is it possible to retrieve his birth cert if i hold these?

Also, if i know somebodys electoral number, is this information any use to me?

Thanks again,
Mick
