1914-1918 service medal ...help needed please!

I have a service medal belonging to a member of my mother-in-law's family.
We would like to research the history of the soldier and we have no idea how to go about it. I have done general FH research before, but never military.
We have the name of the soldier and number on the side of the medal.
Pte. J. Hunt  20015  Notts & Derby R
Can anyone help please?

His Medal Index Card is on Ancestry although i havent access at mo....It is Pte John Hunt 20015 Notts and Derby Regiment...He also served in the Labour Corps so may have been wounded.
If/When you get the card  and there is further info on there including a date of entry to theatre post it on here we may be able to glean more from it.
Service Records are also online although only 30-40% survive may be worth a search though again on ancestry.

Hello Carol and welcome to the Rootschat Armed Forces Boards  

The medal index card for John Hunt is on the NA and on Ancestry.

He was awarded three medals: British War, Victory and the 1914/15 Star.

He entered the theatre of war, France and Belgium, on 17th December 1914. Unfortunately I cannot see a Sherwood Forester's Battalion that matches that date, so he may have been in a later draft.

Later in the war he transferred to the Labour Corps. This would often be because wounds or sickness left a soldier unfit for the front line.

His service record may have survived, although about two-thirds were destroyed during WW2.

I don't currently have access to A ***y I'm afraid. Budget a bit tight at the mo due to lack of work - just another casuality of the recession. 
However it's given me some time to do more FH research, so not all bad  but I'm a bit restricted to the freebie sites just now.

We think John Hunt was from the Buxton or Bolsover region of Derbyshire, as there are family links there, but we don't even know his DOB as yet.
I've been looking on the freebies and found a few possibilites. Will keep digging!

I had a quick glance through the service records earlier, but with it being a fairly common name, I got a bit bogged down.
With his location narrowed down now, it may be a bit easier.
