Cannot find this man in census
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 15:34 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I have been looking for Thomas RICHARDSON (my grandfather) in births/deaths and census since 2000 but cannot locate him.

Here is what I do have.

He married Sarah CHESTERS in 1902,gave his age as 21 his father was called Joseph deceased at time of marriage I have a copy of the cert.

Thomas was a miner from aged 13 and carried on working at the pit after retirement age (he was given a lighter job on top)

I have him on the 1911 census where he gives his birth as born in Felling, Durham, aged 28, married 8 yrs.
but have not been able to find Thomas on any census.
Has anyone any ideas please? ???

Thanks Jan

This could easily be the correct family, but as Thomas states he was born in Felling on the 1911 census I was going on that, the 1911 census is  the only reference to Thomas's birthplace I have, but I realize that this might not have been the whole truth, but it leaves me with no place to go after this.

It is so frustrating as with him being my grandfather I cannot move backwards, therefore cannot get my tree printed.

Am I doomed to be unable to get my mother side sorted? :'(

I have been looking for him since 2001 and if it was someone further back it would not be so bad i could still get my tree printed but as it is I'm stuck.

Can I just say i have been very impressed with the site, it covers lots of different areas in family history..great

I had thought of a professional genealogist but i know this can be expensive so wanted to try everything i could first.

Once again Jan thanks

As I'm from "down south" I don't know how close the two places are, but I do know places of birth tend to vary from census to census. If you are not local it might be worth asking for advice from the board that covers Durham. If you do, give them the 2 census ref. I gave you so they don't waste time looking again.

Good luck

Hi and welocme to rootschat
Unfortunately Felling and West Auckland are not that close as you will know if you live up there.  The former being very close to Gateshead and the latter down near Bishop Auckland.    What other information does the marriage certificate hold?   Occupation of father?   Witnesses?  What did he call his children?
You might be able to eliminate the Thomas from West Auckland by looking for him in 1911.  If he does not show up then he might still be a possibility.   Birth places do vary - given by parents originally then by the person themself might cause confusion.

Hi missmuffit and welcome to RootsChat.

Another possibility - try looking for a village called Felling near West Auckland (you might need old maps).  Felling near Gateshead would be in Northumberland, not Durham.

There are a lot of 'locals' who read this and they are really helpful and friendly.

Hope you find it!

Yes as you say Felling is in Gateshead,

He is living at his bride to be address on marriage cert which is also Heworth, Felling so no clue there. Thomas's father was deceased at the time of his marriage, the witness's were Sarah CHESTERS father and her sister.
I have the family in 1911 and children are Joseph aged 7 born in Felling, Thomas aged 4 born in Walker Northumberlandand, and my mother Sarah aged 1who was born in Kelty Scotland.
